Why are Americans so obsessed with football?

I was raised by European parents. I love my country (USA) and I love being active and playing volleyball and tennis. However, I still can't understand the fascination with American football. Any time you do an activity outside for work, it has to be football. When you're at work and there's a moment of downtime, the conversation will usually center around football. The first thing someone asks you when they meet you is if you're a sports fan. What happend to talking about cars and girls, movies and family? I feel like I'm one of the few people here who doesn't care even a little bit about whose team did what and why.

Can someone explain this to me?

I was raised with a football crazed father. He played football in highschool and won four state championships. My house turns into a football party every Saturday with screaming at the tv, trash talking, and throwing a football around to pass commercial time. We LOVE the sport. I'm a UGA fan.
In high school, the entire school comes out for games. My school has been on many news websites and other cool websites or apps because of how intense we compete with others. The student section gets insane. We countdown and throw baby powder in the air when the game starts. We all wear body paint and have specific days where we wear specific things like camo day and American flag day. We have crazy chants and dance moves on the bleachers. My least favorite thing about it is the pickle toss. It makes me SICK. I can't watch. Basically what it is... Is that someone brings a big pickle and takes a bite before throwing it. Someone else catches it and takes a bite and throws is again until it's all gone.
It's just a thrill for me now. Adrenaline for your team to win and incredible fun to be in a student section. I can't complain about the football players. They look GOOD. and the school rivalries are so bad that we vandalize other schools. Someone ripped one of our bleachers off. Another team painted our mascot statue their school color. We get so competative and enthralled. Pep rally's for football are crazy as well. Lots of chants and trash talking and dancing. Everyone ends up storming the field when we win a big game.

I've never watched American football but it seems very exciting the only thing that i don't understand why americans are so passionate about baseball it seems dull and ridiculous

I don't get the fascination with it, too. I don't think it's any more exciting than curling and not even fun to play either.
