He got probably mad, because he couldn't handle your decision to push him away like that. He has no right to be mad regarding he did something really severe and plain stupid. He can't expect for the relation between you two to make a stand. What honestly went through his mind would be a mystery, but he just showed he is just still a little child.

Everybody gets angry when he/she breaks up, but everything happens for a reason. He might be feeling guilty and can't accept the fact he lost you. He might have loved you at that time. He might have thought that you would forgive him. A lot of possibilities here.

His reaction was an emotional one, and it only shows what he was feeling when you broke up with him. If he was thinking rationally then he would respect your decision, or apologize.
