First, you've done right by ditching him.
He got probably mad, because he couldn't handle your decision to push him away like that. He has no right to be mad regarding he did something really severe and plain stupid. He can't expect for the relation between you two to make a stand. What honestly went through his mind would be a mystery, but he just showed he is just still a little child.
Sorry that you've had to go through that.
Everybody gets angry when he/she breaks up, but everything happens for a reason. He might be feeling guilty and can't accept the fact he lost you. He might have loved you at that time. He might have thought that you would forgive him. A lot of possibilities here.

he didn't want you to find out he was cheating on you. discovering his cheating and breaking up with him is a cruel blow to him.

His reaction was an emotional one, and it only shows what he was feeling when you broke up with him. If he was thinking rationally then he would respect your decision, or apologize.
He just sounds like a normal self-centered jerk. I'm glad you broke up with him for cheating on you. That was completely the right thing to do. He's probably just mad at the situation (being caught) seriously do not go back to a man that cheats on you EVER. My sister tried that a few times and always got hurt. Fuck those dudes
He probably got angry at you because he is too emotionally weak to be angry with himself, and so he directed it to you.
I think a lot of it was that he may have been mad at himself for cheating on you. When people get mad they like to project their anger/point blame to another person and I think he was blaming you for something he obviously did.
Clearly He is angry at himself, i hope that you really do care about your self and you won't get back with him.
