Does him reaching out mean he’s regretting his choice?

I dated a guy on and off for some time. He ended up moving back to his home town to be with his ex and kids. I know he struggled with being away from his kids and he let me know from the beginning he wasn’t completely over his ex. I took it for what it was and just enjoyed the time and fun we spent together. I texted him right after things ended wishing him the best and hope he finds happiness. I never heard back from him and then 2 months later he texts me asking how I am doing and that he saw a dog that reminded him of my dog. Does him reaching out mean he regrets leaving or he just thought about my dog lol?

It could be interpreted in 2 different ways but the most likely, in my eyes is, that he is trying to reach out to you. Something in his current relation with his ex made him think back of the times with you. You know, an ex is an ex for a very good reason.

By moving back with his ex, he was not only hoping to be with his children but also trying to reconnect with the ex. Now, if nothing changed in his behavior or in hers, the old routine has settled back in and the problems that caused the separation in the first place are present again. Now, he may regret having moved back and he is using every pretext to try to reconnect with you.

On the other hand, it could just be coincidence and he did actually see a dog that brought back memories. However, I tend to go for the first possibility.
