Ex and the idea of reconciliation?

I know everyone situation is unique and different when it comes to ex's and relationships. But what if an ex breaks up with you and just wants to stay friends after the fact? (I know we didn't exactly end it on bad terms, he just felt like he wasn't ready and was scared). *We are keeping it cordial at the very least and this was both of our first relationship. If he were given time would he ever come back around to the idea of dating me again in the future?
