Why does my ex-GF feel awkward around me?

My ex-GF and I broke up in February, when she dumped me for another guy. I avoided her for about 6 weeks in order to heal. (The other guy dumped her after about a month).

The past 2-3 months, whenever I saw her, she would avoid me or ignore me. Finally yesterday I confronted her and asked her what was going on. She said she feels awkward seeing me. She kept saying things like "You're my ex! I can't see you! I can't be around you! It just feels weird!".

I don't get it. It would make sense to me if I dumped her or hurt her some way, but it was the other way around. I don't feel awkward around her at all -- I just want to say "Hey! What's new?" and talk to her.

The other odd thing -- though this was good -- was that, while the situation was really tense at first, after a few minutes we were laughing and joking and being playful, just like we always were when we were together.

Can any of you make sense out of this?

I have a very similar situation going on, except she didn't dump me for anyone else, everything else is exactly the same. I tried even being nice to her and seeing if she wanted to catch up as friends, and that even got her upset as well.

Some people have told me its because the ex's see us as better and stronger than before and that's why they are bitter that they broke up with us. They know that if they do try to get us back, we are going to be the ones in control this time, and they are scared of that, or even scared of rejection. It doesn't make ANY sense at all, and I completely agree with you. It's like we are the ones that should be the most upset and tell them we don't want to see them, but its like they are acting like we broke up with them, instead of them breaking our hearts...

Dude, try not to think about it, but don't sink yourself down to her level and call her names or anything. It's not worth it, I think they just might be angry and bitter at themselves and anyone else involved (us) because they need to find something to spend their anger/bitterness on.

You're right -- that doesn't make sense! But then again, most of the things women do don't make sense!!

I suppose that even with an ex, there is a sense that we might reject them. In my case, I wonder if it has something to do with her breaking up with the guy she dumped me for. She hasn't admitted to me that it happened (I know thru friends). Maybe she is embarrassed that she dumped me AND no longer has a new BF?

I think I would like to agree with you on all of the above! except obviously for me, it was my ex who dumped me for another girl, lied about it and is now whining to my friends about how awkward it is to be around me in school everyday. he even got upset when I became better friends with "his" friends during the summer. I'm more than willing to be friendly but he just slinks around (I think waiting for me to approach him?). I don't know what to think anymore...

my experience in the past told me that it's a sign of regret. The awkward silence is because she was thinking of why she broke up with you in the first place. also from the comment saying about how you get along like you use to means she show you that she is still comfortable with you.

Its odd because again, you two are ex's. Its hard to try and think of someone you were once so close to in a different way. Us grls are used to thinkin of guys in 2 ways. One is a guy that is a friend and nothing more, and the other is a guy we crush on. We deal with them in seperate ways. A guy who is a friend I think nothing of talking to or how I act. With a guy I like I think about what I say and how I say it.

So when I'm friends with an ex I have to sort of undo it, and learn to keep a balance. I still want to talk to him and see him, but learn how to not appear too desperate and close but not as if I have a motive. When being friends with an ex you have to actually think about it.

I could be wrong,but she may of been avoiding you because she felt stupid for dumping you for someone who quickly dumped her-she might of though youd be kind of smug about it or feel a bit ahamed,i don't know.

As for the laughing and being like it was,maybe she realised what she lost too late and thinks there's a chance your get back with her,or then again maybe she was just relieved you were being okay with her after everything.

She probably feels weird because you used to be together and talk, or she feels bad about breaking up with you. Or its possible that she thinks you still have feelings for her, and she doesn't want to get your hopes up. It is also hard for some girls to be just friends with an ex.

I ignore guys when I really like them and don't want to make it obvious. Almost like I over compensate. She probabaly likes you, and wants you to approach her which is why when you do, she's nice and normal.

bottom line is she feels stupid because the next guy played her...the grass isn't always greener on the other side but no one will admit that! move on!

She feels guilty. Break-ups are supposed to be on good terms in my opinion. She feels bad for dumping you, or maybe she doesn't understand that it's ok to still be friends.

Then she shouldn’t have broken up. If she feels bad, then she should reverse her decision.
