If you really like the girl, keep really good eye contact, especially at the end of the night. I shows that you are paying attention. Now most of what we are saying and feeling is represented by our body language. So pay close attention to that. Look to see if you keeps eye contact, is she freely glancing and smiling, does she touch you. If all the right signals are there a peck on the lips may be a go. On the other hand if it is seeming iffy, maybe the cheek. She will let you know just pay attention.

I think it depends on the date atmosphere...but a simple peck on the lips or cheek with a hug is fine in my book for a first date but mostly I normally just get the hug .

I think the hug with a cheek kiss is perfect. It leaves her guessing a little bit but still shows interest. Then the transition to the real kiss on the next date should be easier because it's the next step up :) I've been on 3 dates and gotten a hug all 3 times. I'm getting frustrated! lol
