Guys, What does it mean when he says I will always have a special place in his heart?

We have been dating for a few months. When we met, we knew he would be moving across the country for a new job. But still we kept going not knowing how long it would last. Now he is getting ready to leave. Our future is uncertain as life seems to be taking us in different directions right now. He told me the other day though that no matter what I will always have a special place in his heart and that he will cherish our time together for the rest of his life. That meant the world to me of course but I want to know if he loves me. He has yet to say it although I feel like he does.
