Why do guys always ask "how long have you been single?"?

That's a pretty forward question, and I think it's good for men to ask that. Most women, if they aren't interested, will give the generic "I have a boyfriend" answer. But, I think men who are forward and confident like that deserve some respect. It can also be a conversation starter as well. The conversation can lead into past dating experiences, what you look for in a potential partner, etc.

Want to know how long she's been on the market and how many guys she could have potentially boned. Red flag if your very attractive and have been on the market a long time. On the flip side if you've barley been on the market we'll feel a little pressured to speed things up to catch you.

I mean it's not just guys who ask this. When I was dating I was very interested in knowing the answer to this question from the men I was on a date with. I mean just think about it for a second? If you were to ask this question, what would you be trying to find out?

I ask it because I want to know if he broke up with his ex recently, because it will be a good indicator or whether or not he's going to be ready for another relationship. If he's been single for years, I'll want to know why, and that will lead to follow-up questions.

Well I know what in their prehistoric brains happen when they ask such questions.
If you look attractive, they think you're a weirdo or you're incapable to emotional bond with guys and you're a sl. t
If you look less attractive, it lowers you attractiveness level even more, because if no one wants you, the asker doesn't won't you either.
Generally is better to avoid answer to such questions and a guy who really like you will understand you want to talk about your past. Unless you're a virgin, the past hurts always.

Because being single for a long time as a young woman who usually has lots of options (definitely more than men) can mean multiple things, such as having unrealistic standards, but it can also be a good thing, if the woman has been waiting for a serious relationship with the right partner. Some men want to find out whether the woman was single and sleeping around because they prefer a committed relationship with a more serious woman who only has sex in committed relationships. Some men want to find out whether a woman has relationships before because she could be more experienced and mature. There are fewer and fewer women who want to commit to their first boyfriend because they want to experiment and find out what they like in men before committing to someone.
