Is there any difference between approaching someone and chasing someone?

There is certainly a difference. I don't even need any more information to tell you that you are talking about "approaching" not "Chasing". DEFINITELY.

If you were chasing the guy... you definitely would know it.
If you were chasing the guy... he would know about your being interested in him.
If you were chasing the guy... you wouldn't care if you made him feel uncomfortable. You would clearly be making him uncomfortable.

You are good. Showing interest to your crush is necessary and good. I highly recommend it.

Chasing is showing your interest over and over and over and over and over and over... you're not chasing him :)
