What does it mean when you go out on a date with someone?

It's hard for me to explain the situation I'm in (there are a lot of side stories which I can't explain here... I'll keep it concise). I like my best friend. She doesn't feel the same about me. We went on a date once. But since then I've tried to keep our relation STRICTLY FRIENDLY.
The reason being that she doesn't feel the same way for me... And being the way we are is creating a lot of trouble for her as well as for me.

She asked me if I would ever wanna go out with her again. Obviously I do... So I asked her: hangout as friends or a date? And she says date. And I decline the offer.

She said that I've made up my mind that friends can't go out on dates. The thing that bothers me is that, when it's not gonna happen (she made it very clear) then why would I ever go out on a date with her.
To me dating is something what couples would do or at least you go on a date to get to know the person more before committing to them. But in my case, we know each other way too well and have made it quite clear that we will never be a couple. So should I go on "dates" with my best friend?

Dates loosely mean going/hanging out with people so yes I believe you do /could go on dates with your friends. But if your definition of it has a romantic connotation then no, you don't.

"Dating" has a courtship component for me. I wouldn't do it with someone where something more than just friends is impossible. It's different from just "hanging out" in my case, although I sometimes blur the two lines a bit (I don't need to be on a "date" with a girl to find an opportunity to make moves like kissing her, and I don't take dates that formally to the point where it isn't mostly similar to just "hanging out").

I would never call hanging out with a guy a "date" to put it crudely and simply. So I mean maybe it's a semantics thing but I would not think about hanging out with a girl who will always, at best, just be a friend a "date". But we can hang out whenever, wherever.

For the broader situation, in your shoes, I'm personally having lots of fun with this. Now that it's on the table that you desire her that way and she's not running in the opposite direction, I think you can have lots of fun. Cause there's nothing to hide anymore. So personally I'm down for hanging out, or a "date" if she wants to call it that, and I'm going full-blown flirt now. I'll happily make her blush a few times. And maybe she'll come around, start developing some sort of basic curiosity about what we might be like as a couple, or not... and maybe she might introduce me to a friend to whom I transfer those affections and desires while she remains like a "sister" to me. Either way, it's a load off, and I'm having fun with it. That said, I'm a bit on the mischievous side in this context (although I do have some degree of constraint and I am serious enough at the end of the day).
