Do most people like protecting others?

At my old job, I picked a disabled guy who was smart and good looking over another guy who wasn’t disabled and was smart and good looking. And I remember in university at age 19, I got more attention from guys doing nothing other than being helpless and vulnerable than girls with high grades and rigorous athletic lifestyles and high income and fashionable clothes.

I don't know if I would phrase it exactly that way: maybe "helping" others - - giving them a sort of "protection" is simply part of the helping continuum - - - - -

I can see why others would feel grateful for some help being shown to them. I was at the food store yesterday. The checker was a long-time cashier at the store- I'm sure she's around 70 or more. Her Team Manager had just told her that she had to stay past her quitting time- which was in about 15-16 minutes- until someone else came for their shift. I went down to the bagging area and bagged up my own groceries (this was NOT an Aldi- it's a full service store). "Thank you so much for helping bag", she said. "No problem". And it really wasn't a problem for me. I am simply comfortable seeing what needs to be done and starting to help do it.

Was I helping her? Yes.
Was I protecting her? Possibly.
Would I do it again? Definitely.

There are several things in this.

No, sadly people are not prone to protect each other and many do not like to touch the unknown - especially if it doesn't come in the form of a smart and good looking individual. I've more than once, experienced how many people look on the disabled community, even the children I work. Covid has also shown how many people feel about protecting the weak - again including some of the wonderful children I work with.


& I would think that you getting more attention from individuals - who did nothing but be helpless and vulnerable, versus individuals who dedicated their time towards something of value to them.

I wouldn’t say most people. I’m a female and I love going into that helper/ protector/ save the day/ save the victims mentality. I get a lot of validation out of this. As I am good at standing up for people and helping others.
however, I wouldn’t say this is completely selfless. I get validation out of it. I feel good about it. Helping others just feels so like full of purpose and satisfying.
so unless the person derives feeling good out of protecting others, or whatever it is. Then no I wouldn’t say most people are like this. People are motivated by what brings them pleasure, not everyone feels pleasure by protecting others.

I can always tell if someone is genuine if they let you know you may have a booger/ something on your face. Sadly, not too many people will. Just because you have a good heart, doesn’t mean everything great will come your way. It’s a dog eat dog world, and I think more people here unfortunately, are only concerned with themselves.

I don’t like or dislike protecting others. I do it because it’s the morally right thing to do and it’s a good thing to do.

I don’t think so. Several years l witnessed a plane crash and I rushed to the scene. I risked my life to save the pilot. Anyway, all I heard from people was that not many people would have done that. But my thinking was how could you just watch someone die?

I'd like to think that it's a normal human trait. Looking out for each other and especially the vulnerable is what makes us strong as a species. We all do better when we work together.
