On a dinner/coffee date, is it better to face each other while sitting or sit next to each other?

I've always wondered about this thing... :D

I heard facing each other might get a little "too much" for both participants but sitting next to each other probably has disadvantage as well, no? Though you can get closer when sitting next to each other.

I like to sit next to my date at dinner. At my age, I have some hearing loss, and it is particularly noticeable when there is considerable background noise, so sitting closer makes it easier to hear. It also makes it easier for me to hold her hand. Our faces are closer together so when we look at each other, it is physically more intimate.

Finally, after dinner, most women really do want that chocolate confection they saw on the menu but they don't want us to think they are a cow, so they will say they don't want dessert. So I say I would like a dinner but really don't want a whole dessert and ask if she will share a dessert with me. She agrees, I ask and she selects the Death By Chocolate Overdose Cake, we get one slice with two forks, and it is much easier to share that dessert when we are seated next to each other. And I score lots of points with her! (Sly, huh?)

Yeah. And tables can be bigger than the ones you have in the example (in public restaurants). I'm short sighted.. even if I was far sighted, those reasons are why.

. 1) I feel less anxious... no pressure to make eye contact. Do it freely.

2) the space feels awkward, because when you talk to a stranger with the intention of a close intimate relationship or anybody for that matter you are closer, like if two people are standing and talking looking over a balcony, how far are they? They are aide by side. Seeing the same things

3) Not talking private things loudly. So who cares if strangers hear my personal details? I don't know why I care but maybe they don't want to hear. They don't want their kids to hear.

Sitting next to the other person allow for touching and bonding that isn't as possible sitting across from the other person with a literal barrier between you. Flirting and lightly touching the other person does wonders for chemistry and creating that elusive *spark* that people crave when dating. It can be manufactured.

Exactly and what are people talking g about? You can simply turn your head across and Glance at them now and again... there is also more relaxed because the line of eye isn't constantly toward each other... only by choice.

@LovingLoverReturned I agree completely. Having to face someone new you're trying to impress can be really hard and even tiring.
Sitting next to each other is better in my honest opinion for the reasons you've mentioned.

Sitting next to each other is more intimate and personal. Feels better, more casual, it's less intimidating. You can hug, touch each other more easily. You can still kind of face each other even when sitting like on the picture.

Sitting in front of each other is like a job interview, and that's not good. Still sometimes sitting in front of the other is better. Depends on the place and mood you want to achive i guess.
