Is it a red flag if he doesn’t want to talk about his previous relationship?

That is a red flag. If his previous relationship is so bad that he can't even acknowledge it, then it is still impacting him. If that is the case he shouldn't be dating right now.

He should be single and healing (therapy, etc).

1.) Because he won't talk about it, you don't know what to look for
2.) We don't know if he acknowledges if he made mistakes and contributed to the failed relationship. We're really trying to see does he have the ability to reflect on his past and look in the mirror, he's saying "no".
3.) He's willing to hide information from you already, so if you set this precedent by staying with him, he's going to continue hiding stuff. Be careful, actions speak "I like to hide stuff and not tell you everything."

He's telling you a lot by not telling you, at least enough to leave him the hell alone.

I think him not wanting to talk about it, and you wanting to talk about it are both slight yellow flags.

People have very different views when it comes to talking about past relationships. A lot of people think the subject should be off limits. Others have the opposite view that not talking about it is dishonest and maybe hiding things.

One thing for sure though. If you ask about past relationships, be ready for the answer. The past is the past and should not affect the present. If you can't handle whatever he might say, then don't ask. A lot of people can't handle it, and that's why many people think the subject should never be talked about.

I personally don't have any problem talking about it. But a lot of people do. They have their own reasons. So whatever works for them.

I think if people do talk about it, it should come naturally. Otherwise leave it alone.

Depends on how long you've been dating. If it's early, maybe something emotionally traumatic happened and he doesn't like to talk/think about it because it puts him in a bad place mentally. If you're more than several months in and he still doesn't, then maybe I'd be worried about it.

Yeah it's a red flag. Sometimes in the beginning people are uncomfortable but they do end up sharing. But the way he answered is a red flag

Probably out of respect for you. I rarely refer to any of my exes and never volunteer information. I only respond when directly asked.
