How do you know if your SO is going to propose?

I was recently hanging out with my boyfriend and a married couple who have been long time friends of ours. The girl and I were making plans for all of us to go on a hiking trip in a couple weeks. While we were picking out a date, my boyfriend looked at the guy and said "The wives are plotting" as a joke. His statement caught my attention since he had referred to me as his wife. During the same conversation, we started planning a trip to Mexico for next year. As we were looking at resorts, the girl looked at my boyfriend and said "would be a great place for a proposal."
The next day, me and my boyfriend had gone to the gym with a another larger group of friends. After the gym, I suggested we all go to the hot tub. One of the males of the group looked at my boyfriend and said "Your wife has spoken" as a joke indicating that we all had to go to the hot tub now since I suggested it.
My boyfriend and I are serious (we have dated multiple years and lived together) and have talked about marriage in the future, but these comments have me wondering if it might be sooner than expected.
