Why would someone make you madly fall in love and then leave?

I was dating this guy short-term and during our relationship he showed some serious commitment and that he's very serious towards me and that I am very special to him. Then suddenly he broke-up with me telling me that he's not feeling the connection, that I am too pushy and that he's always had commitment issues. While we were dating he even sent my photos to his family, spoke to his family about me, introduced me to some of his friends and even his boss from work. Then he said he didn't mean all that and that this doesn't suggest he wanted long-term with me. At the end he also said he didn't like me that much from the beginning and wasn't into me so much. WHy would he do that? I am completely devastated
