Stupid to wear a facemask to a wedding reception?

*As stupid as this seems to you this is actually stressing me out*

I have really really bad anxiety and the thought of walking around without my face masks makes me feel uneasy. I never wanted to go to my boyfriend sister's wedding reception in the first place, I am being forced to go. Plus I have nothing to wear so I am going to gave to buy a dress in the next few hours before the wedding party whatever you call it. My boyfriend knows about my anxiety and his family does as well but they have made me go otherwise they will make me feel guilty. Should I just say I am ill? Or put my face mask on once I have brought a dress?

Are you putting your face mask on because you're insecure of your looks and so you want to cover yourself with the excuse of good covid practices? If so, I would say to work on your looks with better makeup and hair rather than covering. A smile in a wedding is better than a mask even in case you aren't the best looking out there. Maybe you can train a bit to the mirror before going, if you lost the habit to have charming facial expressions, after wearing the mask for long. You could also go having walks without the mask today, to fight against this anxiety before getting there. I think it won't be that difficult once you do it a couple of times.

Instead, if you're anxious for covid and want to keep the mask to protect yourself, bad news you're going to find out after 2 years: the mask (classic) is not meant to protect yourself. It protects the others from the chances you are contagious, because it blocks or shortens the distance the virus is shot away from your mouth or nose. But regarding taking air in, it filters an irrelevant quantity of air, if there are holes on the sides. So unless the mask is absolutely completely sealing your face without any chance to let the air in from the sides (and so it would filter it all), in order to avoid the virus with a classic mask you should stay 1-2 meters away from people who don't wear any mask, regardless if you wear it or not, and use gel after touching handles, money etc.
Said that, it makes small to no sense to be the only one wearing a mask "to protect the others", in that wedding, if all the others don't respect the others too with the same and don't care staying next to all the others who are without.
As you might consider, in the US there is this strong conservative and insecure "manly" mindset and probably you would "offend" their shaky values by keeping a mask on, so they could badmouth you behind, or think you're a stupid etc. While in fact you would be doing that to respect them in the first place, but many people still think the mask is mostly meant to protect who wears it, so they will think you're weird instead of respectful. All in all I would think it's more convenient to not wear it, in that wedding, but keep it in your bag in case some people wear one and so it would look more socially acceptable for those triggerable sissies.

Why are you attached to an inanimate object like a mask. The COVID is over. It makes no sense and points to other underlying therapeutic needs. Go see a psychologist please.

It is for my anxiety it is not as easy as that and I can't afford therapy

Go to a counselor. Find a 800 or 888 number to call and get started. It is over-the-top to me. There are avenues if you even think you have issue with anxiety. To me, your behavior is outside of Normal normal curve. 800 numbers or search subject with your zip code? Your call as you are an adult. Hope it works out well for you 🙂

Sometimes in relationships there are “must attend” events that we might not want to go to. We go to them because it’s important to the families. As for wearing a mask? Totally up to you.

i think if you're able to, push yourself to show your face. but if you're really that anxious to the point where you can't handle it its best to be comfortable
