Why do men propose to women they really don’t want to be with?

Just last week a guy I’ve known for several years and had a few sexual encounters with who turned out to become a really good friend told me just last week that I am the woman of his dreams and then he posts on Facebook yesterday that he’s engaged to this woman he recently started dating this year. Why do men do that? Why do I have to be the one who got away lol.. essentially the main reason we never became a couple is because he had to move back to NC to be with his two sons and I’m in the west coast. We talked a few weeks ago, I let him know as a friend that I’ve been in a relationship the past few months and he seemed upset by it and the started professing his love for me.. but then now gets engaged? Why?
