Would you refuse to date someone you liked on principle (they used to date your friend)?

This guy I like has been giving me a strong vibe that he is interested in me, and I was starting to think he was trying to make it known to me.

However, I was hanging out with my ex and this guy (he is a mutual friend who I met through my ex), as well as some other people & We were on topic of dating. My ex was giving hypothetical situations to the other guy about situations in which he would date someone and one thing he said was “would you do it if she had dated one of your friends already” and this guy said “no I wouldn’t mess with my friend that way. I wouldn’t ever do it.”

I was wondering if he said this because he really means he would never date a friends ex, or if he felt uncomfortable from the circumstances and it was easier to say that answer. There is a chance I could be misinterpreting his actions towards me, but it was really seeming like he liked me so I’m confused.
