It's about my discord-pal, 18 years old just a year older than me, we had been chatting in a sibling energy for a little over a year.

Just a few months ago he broke up with his online girlfriend and discovered how hard dating online can be.

Just today he asked a girl out and she said yes.

We were like "Yay! Cheers for moving on!"

Chatted casually about some things before he begged me for advice over how to be a good boyfriend.

I was saying something like "... Big bro, you shouldn't be asking someone who had never been a girlfriend before, I could've been able to help if it's about real life dating but not online."

After a bit of bickering and joking, I proposed asking here for good advice if he isn't sure about the one Google has to offer, he agreed.

So, here I'm!! 🤣

Any ideas how to be a good boyfriend when online dating?

Actually, my friend's ex was a person doing self-harm which is known to us as she's opened up to it in the server we all share with other people. I didn't want to poke at his wound because I could pretty much guess why she dumped him, turns out dating someone she liked wasn't going to solve the void inside her.

Personally, I don't really think online dating has a lot of scope and hope for your friend, or anyone for that matter. It's the same as trying to maintain a long distance relationship, so unless your friend will likely eventually see this girl, he probably has no hope of making this last.

Personally, I was in an online relationship myself in 2019 or so on Discord myself. It was with this girl who was a year older than me. We wouldn't really do much other than just chat each other up at night and maybe flirt and tease each other online. They could also video chat each other too, if they feel like it. But other than that, there isn't really much to do in an online relationship.

Just tell him to always be there for her and to let her know that she has someone who's there for her, even they're thousands of miles apart.

I've been in many and had one that lasted a year. There ain't a trick to it, just do all the things you are doing and keep doing them that's what made her want to date you anyway.
Then the only thing that ruins it is a lack of understanding the difference between love and lust. But that's not something explained more discovered on your own because one would just reject the idea unless they've realised it themselves and would even lie about it. Afterall no one wants to admit they lost that lust therefore don't want them anymore especially if they've been together for longer than shorter.

Meeting in person. If he is serious about her he shouldn’t be so hot and cold towards her, believe me it irritates a lot. (I have been going through the same situation 🥲) whatever he feels it should be upfront.

Online... there's nothing much you can do unless you want you're going to meet them. Just be there for her to talk her mind out, send random pictures which she hopefully enjoys etc.
