Is this a bad thing to do or a good thing when getting to know someone (friendship and dating)?

When I'm talking to someone and I ask them a question, and if they dont reciprocate the question back after answering, then I'll basically never text them again. This is usually through text but I would react the same way in person.

I'll ask the person. "What kind of music do you listen to?" And they say, "I like alternative rock." And that's it. They don't even say, "What about you?" I would feel more inclined to say something about their taste in music when they also care to hear what kind of music I like too. If they just answer it and that's it, then I would never reply back. Or never talk to them again if it were in person.

I totally know what type of person you are talking about and honestly its totally annoying. But I usually respond to them. I will use your example.

Me: What type of music do you like?

Her: I like alternative Rock.

I wait 5 to 10 minutes...

Me: Oh, wasn't sure if you were going to ask. ;-) Like alternative rock as well, my favorite band is Red Hot Chili Peppers.

Note I did not end it with a follow up question like, "What's your favorite band?" or "What's your favorite song?"

I left it as a statement... now I see and wait what they come back with... if nothing then I forget it. But if the conversation keeps lagging like that, I lose interest in the whole situation.

So yes, on some level you are wrong for just not replying. You should put out a little more effort... but I get what you are saying it's frustrating.
