I asked if we should call it a day but tried to make it work, so why did he change his mind & break up?

I felt him becoming distant even though he said he was happy. I told him how it hurts me so then he broke up. I think he wanted to break up really but wanted to seem like the good guy doing the right thing, whereas if he wanted to make it work he would’ve. I know it’s a lot more complex than that, but what do you guys think?
