Hookups can be from all kinds of people for all kinds of different reasons. Sometimes I just want someone young and energetic to have a mindless good time with. Sometimes I want an older person to treat me the same way.

My preference just comes from whoever can push the buttons that need to be pushed. Having a common background, like being similar age, can help to ease the process, but it's not needed.

Relationships though, probably someone my age or older who is mature, respectful, and open-minded. Anyone else and I know it's just going to end badly because that's how life works. It's silly to assume a young person will ever remain bogged down in a non-perfect relationship. The brain is practically hardwired to want to explore and see new things, especially as a young person.

Even if I had the perfect relationship with a younger person where they were constantly showing signs of deep commitment, I *know* it would go away eventually. You can't be a human and not wonder what life is like elsewhere, or if you're missing something. If you've only had the one relationship, respecting yourself will inevitably lead you to needing to find out if you're missing something.

Older people know what they want more. It's easier to maintain a steady relationship with an adult.

Simple reason is that it is not about age but what phase of life we're in.

If I'm in my early career phase and she's still in studying and partying that makes for an awkward relationship but a potentially extra fulfilling hookup or friends with benefits situation. Similarly if the age spins the other way around.

Basically a hookup is a vacation into a different phase of life but longterm I want to do my own journey and so need someone closer to where I am. Age is actually less relevant than that.
