Might not have been clear to them that there was a problem in the first place. I think there's a general difference in communication patterns between men and women which have the inadvertent effect of making them not taking each other so seriously when they are upset.

This reminds me of students who put the bare minimum into their classes throughout the whole semester and then freak out during finals when their grade is borderline F. So they start trying and cramming everything but they end up not doing well.
