Let's be realistic: physical attractiveness matters a lot in determining ease and success in dating, especially for younger people. Also there is a notion of conventional attractiveness in any given society. Most people are in fact attracted to the same physical traits. Personally I think it is cruel and misleading to tell people who don't look conventional attractive that it's all about their personality or that they're just not trying hard enough.
I think realistic and actionable advice would be to try to date people who fall into a similar level of attractiveness as yourself. After a certain age (when you're over 30) looks really do stop mattering that much. As people who don't look conventionally attractive, we must strive to stop caring about looks in a partner. This can be very difficult, but ultimately we can have very healthy marriages or long term relationships that will last into old age.

My advice would be to be an interesting person and fun to be around.
Agree go for similar looks, but for guys... if your social skills and perceived value is high, you can attract other more attractive women.
Up to a certain extent I think this might work. But if a rich man who isn't attractive marries a beautiful woman, it could cause strain in the marriage later, especially if he married her only because she was pretty. Not always true, but this does tend to happen.
Personally I do have high perceived worth. I have a good salary, I work as an engineer. I also play in some bands. I have a few female friends, it's not like I don't try to talk to women or something. But I am very short and I look like a child. So far I have only tried asking out girls who are somewhat pretty. I have received a lot of kindness from them, but obviously they have no incentive to date me when there are better looking guys who earn about as much as I do.
It's not that at age 30 attractiveness is less important, it's that at age 30 everyone is ugly, especially women.
