Can I be vague about my past when it comes to partners?

Would someone ask on a first date about the persons history? Id wondered if you can be vague if youve never had one before, it doesn't make your lying but leaving open to interpretation?

Someone who asks about the persons history or "body count" on a first date is a douche bag. It's a huge red flag. Drop them from consideration.

Fair enough, I've never been on one but wouldn't think it was a big deal to ask if uved had long term partners before

It's very fishy to probe your sexual history on a first date. It shows that his primary interest is sex.
I would rather get to know each other first to see if we click.

Talking about past relationship in a date would only be valid in case of someone who was married before, had children. Even so, only superficially.

People worried about past partners have huge issues themselves and it is a huge red flag.

I do ask about history because I’m interested in her upbringing, education and experiences. I’m not interested in her body count though.
