Why’d someone hold your face only to kiss your cheek?

You don’t have fat cheeks or anything.

Imagine, that both of you are at a party of a family member, whose business partner and a best friend dated you in the past.

He knows you leave the country soon, he asked you for one more dance before he leaves the party , then at the end of the dance he held your face, looked at your eyes for a while, gave you a deep and a heavy kiss on the cheek and said “Goodbye.”

Why kiss your cheek if he holds your face? Why don’t go for the lips?

That happened to me at my buddy’s apartment in Kansas. I was home visiting from university. He invited a few girls from his complex over who were like ten years older than us for drinks.

This one girl said she’d grown up in Ohio and I replied I had too. Surprised, she came over, grabbed my cheeks and kissed me on the cheek. She was intoxicated. People were as surprised as I was. Nothing else happened.

Perhaps more relevant, before I’d moved from Ohio, I decided to ask this girl I’d crushed on for a couple years to go out to a movie. We had our first and last kiss, a farewell. She had written me a farewell letter at some point. She also randomly contacted me one last time when I was in college wanting to know how things were going.

It means both goodbye and hello. Context matters. I think they go for cheeks when unsure if you want it too or if it’s in front of a lot of people, especially in front of people.

We weren’t friends though, we dated in the past before I had to break it off.

Yeah, I think he was just respecting OP’s boundaries. They’ve already broken up. He’s an ex. So he likely thought it was inappropriate to kiss her lips.

I think its the circumstance you describe , he wishes to convey intimacy in his actions , but he knows it probably not right to go for a full blown snog , so the action kind of conveys the feeling.

Seems to be a culture barrier here. I know I am not going to kiss any girl on the lips either. It is just not for me. I might kiss her in private but PDA is not my thing 😒

I mean why would he kiss the lips if he is not related to you now? Most women would slap the guy if he's not their boyfriend/husband and went for the lips
