I disagree that people overestimate personality.

I wouldn't date a woman if I didn't find her physically attractive. But I wouldn't continue to date her if I found that I didn't like her personality, no matter how beautiful she was. So, in that sense, personality trumps appearance.

I would say it´s the other way round in my experience people focus way more on the physical looks than the character. In my experience many people just want to be with the most beautiful possibility and care less whether there is a match in character or personality.
