Maybe his girlfriend turned out to be engaged to someone else and never told him. Then he found them kissing as he went to her apartment on her birthday to surprise her with a trip to Italy.

I wouldn't.
If someone doesn't want to date, or aren't ready to date after something, then they shouldn't force themselves. Nothing good will come out of that.
Sometimes you just need some time away, and heal.
And if that person still doesn't want to date, then they shouldn't.

Convince is maybe the wrong term. If he had given up on dating I'm assuming there would be a reason behind it. Maybe listen and understanding his thoughts, feelings, insecurities, being someone that's there for him my help. Convincing them wouldn't help them to heal.
