Why do people love being single?

I have been single my whole life. After work, I have nobody to talk to about my terrible workday, if it was a bad day. During the hardest times of my life, I have nobody to give me a hug. Sometimes, you spend the entire weekend without talking to even 1 person. When I want to go to Japan on vacation, it literally takes me months to be able to find someone to travel with. Suzy wants to go to japan but she doesn't have the money. John wants you to go with him to venezuela. But you dont want to go to venezuela. Kim canceled plans with you last minute. You crave physical affection, so you go constantly looking for fwbs or cuddle buddies. You want to eat at a new restaurant every few days but lack someone to eat with. You're lucky if you can find someone to eat with you once a month. You look around and find that you are the only person eating alone.

Who the hell would glamorize this type of life? Doing 90% of everything alone. Meeting up with a friend once a week really isn't enough. You have no one to come home to, nobody to give you affection, nobody who gives a crap about you

OK, so I'm one of those people who love being single. I don't know if I'm typical or rare in the "loves being single group".

Since I was about 15, I've been everyone's support structure. Family, in the Army as an officer, in Fortune 100 companies and private equity as a finance guy/CFO, friends, etc. People came to me for financial advice, relationships, career advice, tech advice, home ownership advice, political advice, etc.

They came to me for money. Can't pay the rent or car insurance. Nieces and nephews need back to school clothing. Need a cosigner on a car loan or an apartment. At work people came to me to fight for them for promotions, when they felt persecuted by an asshole boss, when they were ignored for raises, etc.

It was exhausting. And they never reciprocated. In part because they weren't in a position to help me. But in part because most people are totally absorbed in their own problems and never thought to even ask. I don't know why but I was a magnet for people seeking all sorts of help.

Well it got old. I got divorced and I've been blissfully alone for about 10 years now. I limit my interactions with strangers. I have a small circle of good friends. I can come and go as I please when and where I please. I don't worry about coordinating with anyone. I ski by myself. I backpack by myself. I go out by myself. If I want to "meet someone" on any given night, it's usually not much of a problem. But I don't tell them much about myself and any relationship is usually short and /or I keep most women at arms length. I'm up front about living life on my terms. It is so peaceful and quiet. I no longer have the weight of everyone else's problems. My time is my own. No drama. No discussions about where to eat.

I really do enjoy being alone. It helps that I'm an introvert. I really don't need other people's approval to validate me. I enjoy sitting back and observing human behavior these days rather than getting involved in their lives.

Generally speaking, most people hate being single. I don't know anyone who loved it, I've met people who are asexual sociopaths that were indifferent to it, but besides that the majority crave companionship, love, physical affection, and orgasms.

I'm only slowly starting to imagine being ready. I have great friends and I spend a lot of time with them. And I have hobbies that take a lot of my focus, energy and time as well. I love being single, and I'm not scared of being alone.  Would I also love being in a great relationship? Yeah, sure. But I would rather be in the right relationship with the right person, than jump from meaningless relationship to meaningless relationship. I would rather be single, than be with the wrong person. It's not worth it.  Even if it's not a horrible relationship, you can end up feeling much more alone than you were as single.

They probably experienced bad relationships to the point being single is better than having your heart broken by someone they thought actually loved them. I prefer to be In a relationship , but I am not going to be in a relationship with just anyone , Nowadays I prefer FWB’s with some strings attached with the intentions of eventually being committed to each other , I no longer like to rush into relationships with a girl because in the beginning , it’s just infatuation with each other , but once the infatuation runs it’s course that’s usually when relationships have a 50/50 chance of surviving. FWB’s with some strings attached eliminates that from happening because it gives the both of you time to see the big picture before committing to each other 100 percent. So it’s better to not rush into commitment for that reason. I use to rush into relationships with girls’ only to end up with broken hearts once the big picture opens up , either she dumps me or I dump her. So the FWB’s with some strings attached has been working better if her and I are on the same page with things. Basically we are allowed to date others’ if we choose to but we promise to not have sex with others’ if we do? We end the benefits part and remain friends. This only works when you meet someone that is honest and on the same page as you.

I 100% hear you on this. It's shitty being single. I don't know if there are very many people who love being single. I'm sure there are some people who feel that way. I don't think it's very common though. Often if someone feels that way, they have had a really bad experience in their past relationship (s) and that's contributed to a decision to stay single.

So, I just don't think there are many people who would argue with you here (maybe I'm wrong). It sucks to be single. Don't go thinking there are a bunch of people saying the loneliness you're experiencing is the ideal way to live.

I think people who say they love being single either have had nothing but bad relationships, have never been in a relationship, or can't get into a relationship for whatever reason.

There is nothing great about being single. It can be very lonely and isolating. People need companionship that goes beyond the platonic level. People crave love and intimacy and they are lying to themselves if they say they don't crave it or just asexual which is rare for the majority of people.

Relationships can offer a lot, but they also come with more work, more expense, and more sacrifices. You won't always get your way, and you won't always be the center of attention. Many people can't handle that - they want all the benefits of a relationship, but none of the responsibilities or sacrifices, and that's not sustainable.

Some people are truly happier alone, but a lot of people are simply coping with the fact that they are too selfish and self centered to maintain a relationship, and so they glorify the single lifestyle to save face, even though they are desperately lonely and really want a relationship. People who have been single a long time often struggle with the fact that a relationship means a lot of compromises, and when the honeymoon period wears off, they go back to wanting everything their own way and on their own schedule. That doesn't end well.

I know the point of contention tends to be around peace for a lot of us dudes. Perfectly fine with banging a friends with benefits's or just paying a professional because it scratches that itch and I'm basically paying her to leave me alone. Post nutt clarity is a thing.

I know there are plenty of guys out there that still wish they could even get a girlfriend, but you ladies ignore those guys and currently around 68% of us refuse to even on a date because the women are entitled which brings me back to peace. It feels good not having to answer stupid questions, deal with emotional baggage or be an emotional tampon, and it really feels good just doing whatever I want to do at allow times.

Again, a lot of people are not like me and I know what has made me the way I am over the years. Friends or bothersome, everything you suggested made me think about the price tags that came with every activity when I'd rather just be home reading a good book or learning new things from AI et cetera.

But you asked so I told. I also have a history of being stuck with friends irritating the shit out of me or trying to drag me to clubs and shit, or having a woman bicker at me because I just feel like drinking some beer and relaxing instead of going on a trip to nowhere or eating food that was probably cooked in seed oils.

I wanna go to South Africa for an adventure, Helen wants to go to Bermuda to relax. Mark said he'll go to South Africa with me, but he wants to rough it in a hostel or campsite and eat canned food to save money. While I want to sleep in a nice hotel and eat out.

I can totally relate to the friends with benefits thing too. I had a really close female friend, that I had feelings for, but she didn't see me as anything more than just that. A friend. So I would go seek out other girls for sexual gratification and always ended up feeling guilty.

I guess some people see relationships as high maintenance, but you have to be really introverted and I don't know the word in English, but in Polish we call them "samolub", to not crave a relationship.

I guess they benefits of being single is you save money and you don't need to compromise. You can live your life however you choose.

No more emotional manipulation, no more being taken advantage of, no more being lied to, no more pointless drama. Some people value the absolute peace and freedom that comes from being single.

Sure, you don't necessarily have anyone to come home to, but that beats the hell out of dreading to come home. You can make new friends more easily than you can find a partner that won't treat you like crap.

Because people have been vulnerable to the wrong people and hurt in the process which makes them not want to open up or spend time developing a relationship that needs to be maintained.

It also comes with a lot of loss of independence in the sense it is not just about you, but your partner now. People think of relationships and think of a chain and a burden holding them back because they now have to go beyond their selfish desires and wants and needs and have to consider the other person they are with.

Looking at it from that perspective l, it is easier to just be on your own. No need to worry about another. No need to take their thoughts, emotions, dreams and goals into question over yours. You can do whatever you want, whenever you want and with people for as long as you want.

People in their 20s tend to have that line of thinking. The problem is they hit their 30s and they realize they've never committed their alone now and most people seeking partners have already found them. Women complain men want them to serve them. Men complain they end up mostly working tasks for their girl and further complain the girl takes peace out of their lives and there is always high drama.

Both seem to agree relationships are a lot of work. Even same sex friendships are a fair bit of work and positive social interactions are somewhat addictive. All the more so when your gender preference and sex is involved.

A year ago, I decided to curtail my social interaction severely as I thought I should be more resilient. The plan was to do this for a year then resume social interaction from more a position of strength.

One year on, it doesn't seem like I am going back to a highly social life. Most problems in your life are due to your social circle. Whilst nobody can be solitary in the modern world, I am finding mostly solitary to be a good place.

Part of the trick is to realize a close relationship or close friendships are not really necessary.

Simple. You can be single and Still have active social/sex life, if you put forth the effort to get outside of your usual recluse life style. I have been single most of my adult life with the exception of a brief marriage and one LT live in, with a college friend.

I have worked to develop and keep multiple friendships from work associates, casual acquaintances that I have met. You have to be willing to 'be a friend' to have friends and people you enjoy being around and with.

It may be more difficult for a woman, but I have close friendships with work associates from past jobs that I stay in contact with, have lunch with, do some travel with etc.

If you lived close, WE could probably be friends and I would try to help you make and keep friends you can enjoy.

I often wonder how many of the people talking about how awesome being single is are actually truly satisfied and happy themselves. Particularly the older ones. Case in point, Chelsea Handler, who is almost 50 years old but still acts like she's 17.

It's not that great being in a relationship unless their the right person for you yeah you get sex and cuddles sometimes but if it doesn't work between use two you end up arguing with each other and being paranoid about what each other are doing its good when you find the right one it's perfect I've had that but people change and none of my long term relationships have lasted. Being single sucks and I think getting passed that is the fear of being rejected if someone asks someone out or are they out of their league. After that it's trying hard to keep someone interested that can be pretty hard. If you have friends with you someone asking you out might not happen.
