What is your opinion on "Single Mothers By Choice"?

I am almost 30 years old, no luck in dating. Over my time, I have realized that MOST married people tend to be married simply because they have low standards. Plenty of people have low standards but just aren't aware of it. Most people either settle for someone who treats them super well or marry someone because they like 1 or 2 aspects about the person, which is usually "she is so entertaining or fun to be around" while ignoring all her other flaws or red flags. I chose to not settle. Most of the guys that my female friends around my age are dating, I personally would never ever date.

And the guys who I actually want, I have no fucking clue where to get them.

Thus, I have decided to become a single mom in a few years so at least I get to enjoy motherhood. I'm educated, very financially stable, plan on raising my child in a upper class neighborhood, sending it to the best schools, summer camp, violin classes, martial arts classes. I can give my child anything it wants. I have never wanted my life to be this way but I just can't find any man who fits the bill of what I am looking for.

I understand feeling discouraged, cynical, and frustrated. However, you really ought to think very carefully about what you just said, as I suspect you have not (sorry, but I'm not at all convinced that you have).

First things first. Quite bluntly, you are not in any of these marriages that you claim to know so much about. I've often told people that marriage is one universe joining another. A universe is vast, expansive, and mysterious, as is the inner life of a person. So when you have two of those joining together, they're going to state the most obvious things first; if someone says "A", that does not mean that there's not also a "B" and "C" that follow. That and the fact that in marriage, there will be times of monotony, when it seems as if your spouse isn't much more than a roommate. You get into a rhythm, a pattern and as a result, the excitement wears off. It fades in and out though. And that's just the way things are in life. So yeah, sorry, but in some ways "settling" is part of the deal. It's also why I tell people that they should not focus so much on "compatibility" in their relationships. Compatibility is like the Pirate's Code; It's more like a guideline than a rule.

Plus, you've said in at least one other comment something to the effect that men are useless and I imagine elsewhere too (the general details you've provided don't leave much room to speculate), all the while claiming that there's a certain type of guy you actually do want, so which is it?

Now with all that said, deny it though you might, a child needs his or her father and the odds are significantly against them if the father is not around. It's one thing to tell a child "your father left". It's another to get a sperm donor (which is what I suspect is the plan) and therefore effectively say "You're a lab experiment. Some schmuck needed gas and beer money, so he jerked off into a little cup to some porno vids. Don't you feel special there, Junior?" You can tell me all day long about Barack Obama, JD Vance, and I have no idea why or how Kamala Harris is some kind of inspiring fatherless success story that I should be "looking at with jealousy" (your words), they are what's called the exception that proves the rule.

There are at least three other women on this thread who have been quite open and unrestricted in their hostility towards men (the irony being that two of them are married). All three of them have approved this idea, which, if you ask me, is extremely hypocritical. Men are useless, stupid, perverted, and trashy failures... except for their husbands and randos who, for money, do what they apparently do best, but those women who participate in and contribute to the cycle by catalog shopping for sperm are exempt from moral accountability. If you do this and have a boy, you've created a target. Have a girl, a cynical hunter. And all the summer camps and music lessons in the world won't compensate for anything beyond surface-level satisfaction. The mission in life that they will have, based on what you've said here, is to fill a void. And that is no way to raise a happy, healthy, well-adjusted child. To do so would be a severe and grave injustice to the child.

Now again, though I've made a harsh assessment, I do understand to an extent why you want to do this. But this is not going to solve the problem.

I had both parents’ growing up so I always wanted my kids’ to have both parents’ but unfortunately it didn’t go that way for a period of time, So if you are considering being a single parent , then you should be fine , just don’t rely on anyone else to help you out , because that’s where you will get frustrated and overwhelmed when you realize you can’t rely on anyone else. I think deciding to be a single parent is empowering especially a single mother. I respect that there are usually deep-seated reasons why someone decides to do that.

But please, please consider the life you want your child (ren) to have. Statistically, having two parents in the household is usually better off, typically a mom and a dad. The reason for this, for children, is best to have one parent at close proximity (starting off at least) around as much of the time as possible. Don’t have to be the mother necessarily but it should be at least one person. Realistically nobody can be everywhere at once.
I help a lot of single parents get back on their feet after a slump and this is something I see very often:

If you’re out working, your child (ren) are going to be alone or raised by nannies/childcare.
They will eventually grow to recognise how much you had to sacrifice for them which they will most likely be grateful for but also saddened by because they will be inclined to think it would’ve been easier for you (and by extension, them) if there was someone else there too.

With all that said, it’s your choice. Make sure you think this through.

I think it's a very selfish choice. You are doing it for you, not for the child you will bring into the world who will grow up without a father. The statistics are clear that fatherless children are at far greater risk for all kinds of maladies, from drug addiction, sexual abuse, mental illness, childhood pregnancy, poverty. The list is very long, and the disparities are not subtle. I know, you think you'll buck the trend, right? Most women in your situation think that. And yet the statistics don't lie.

Be honest with yourself about 1) Your odds of success, 2) why you are making the choice you make, and 3) the fact that it's not just you whose life and outcomes you are controlling. Children don't get to make that choice for themselves. You make it for them, so choose wisely, honestly, and unselfishly. There are already far too many fatherless children in the world. Many happen because of selfish and irresponsible men, and some happen because of irresponsible women, too. But in most of those cases it was a mistake. Actually making the premeditated choice to create a fatherless child seems the most irresponsible one of all.

I actually do have to agree with you and I relate to a lot of your points: I too will never settle for someone just because they have one or two cutesy things about them, or even because the sex is good. And you are absolutely right that most people have low standards for dating and marriage. That's why so many people realize later on they're not really happy with their partner after they've come to see things about them that were always there, they just didn't want to see it.

However, kids do need both parents. No offense, but single parent households particularly with just a mom have proven to produce soft and overly emotional men, and sometimes girls who grow up not even having a good relationship with their moms, or they grow up living whorish lifestyles. Of course not all single mom families are like this blah blah blah, but I think it's common enough.

Don't cancel out the idea that you'll never meet the right guy, there is someone for everyone but people like you who are more observant than most will take longer. That's just how it goes. People with more intelligence generally take longer to find the right partner.

Takes a lot of mental, emotional and physical strength to raise a child all by yourself other than being financially capable. I respect that. Although a close guy friend believe that if you adopt, a family isn't complete unless there's a mum AND dad in the picture. I tell him that although that sounds ideal and in many cases, it did benefit the child in many great ways but I told him that so many people think they'll spend the rest of their lives raising a child with their partner but their partner either unfortunately pass away or they get seperated. Not a fan. The statistics indicate that kids are much better off with two parents. Everyone knows this, and you can see the application of that knowledge in how nearly impossible it is for single men and gay male couples to adopt. For the worst possible reasons, we don’t similarly restrict single mothers. If you can provide a loving, stable home, I don’t see a problem with it as long as your child (ren) has/have positive male influences in their lives. Just don’t expect to have much of dating life once you’re a single mom.

That said, I do wonder if your standards in dating aren’t a bit too high (admittedly your standards for a partner should be pretty high if you want to have children with them).

I think it is important to have a father figure in a childs life especially since they need a male role model. I don't see any problem, except one, a potential one. One that is very common, among parents, single or not anyway. By not relying on another parent, on someone else than you, you're at risk to over-invest on the significance of your child. Which, in turn, can transform you into an all-mighty deity, symbolically, for them, while them are at risk to believe that they have a god to please and obey to. Again, that is common among parents and children, single or not, I just think you have greater risks to create this situation.

I don't know if you're right, I understand your impression, as an impression. Though you're making it sounding like you know for sure, which is impossible, because you're not living the intimate life of other people than yourself. What's much more likely is that you're not seeing in most people something you're attracted to. Which is what you describe. That's a common view, that's my case, I'm picky as well like many others. And yet, it didn't stop me to have a love life, for many years.

I think it’s selfish. If you want to be a single mother, adopt a child. Sure you can give that child love, what s/he wants financially as you say, but you can never give the child a father which is more then all the materialistic things put together. Materials can never replace a father. A boy needs his father o know what being a man is all about, things you can’t teach him. Most women say I can raise my son. Sure you can, but more than likely you’re going to raise him according to what you think a man shouldn’t be. But most women raise their sons on what a man should be, which you haven’t the slightest clue what that is other then what you’re feelings tell you. A girl needs her father as well to see how a man should treat her, to set boundaries in relationships, to know what she should seek in a partner. This isn’t about you as far as what you want. I am the child of a single mother by choice who had me at an older age. My mother recently passed away. My mother also wanted to enjoy motherhood. She didn't think about the fact that I would resent her for not providing me with a father. She didn't consider that when she died I would have no immediate family.

I grew up in a great neighborhood, went to expensive private schools, went to summer camp, took piano lessons, did martial arts. That's all great. I needed my dad. No one should bring a life into the world if they can not provide it with a stable upbringing. Your child, if you choose to have them, will face immense difficulties. They will be made fun of for not having a father. They will be embarrassed when they have to do family tree projects for school. When you get into an argument with them, and cannot agree, they will have no one to talk to to make them feel heard.

Your choice is your own, but to anyone reading this who is considering becoming a single mother by choice, I am the product of your decision, and I implore you not to do it.

If you have resources so you don't have to work or have support/day care, it's more dooable at young ages. If you are outsourcing a lot of it... someoneelse is raising your kid. that can lead to problems... others may not care for or educate your kid as you'd like, or may even harm them without you knowing.

As well, as kids get older, they need structure, discipline as well as freedom. Ithelps to have two parents, as you at times need to hold a firm stance on issues... you'll want emotional support, and release. That's benefit of good partners.

I see some kids being raised now in the family and Im step parent. all things are possible.

Women these days have just got strange ideas about just how much choice they have available to them. You might be inclined to look at the full span of mankind as potential partners, but that not only disregards practical logistical and geographical considerations, but since it tends to be judging based simply on pictures and / or a few words in a controlled environment, it is also riding on a lot of assumptions about them that are likely false.

Nobody's perfect, I don't see anything wrong with finding somebody you enjoy and building a life with them.. Maybe that's what you need to realize.. There's nothing wrong with settling.. That's why you're single and they're not.. Having a kid is a coping mechanism for the impending loneliness you know you'll feel with being so picky as you get older.. As for your child, they'll never know the love and stability of 2 parents.. Or experience that masculinity from a father.. Not to mention mothers don't seem to be the best with handling teenagers alone. So good luck if you decide to do that..

Most single women avoid accountability and will come up with excuses to make their choices feel better. People can do whatever they want no need to wrap it up in a pretty bow. As for the settling part I guess it depends, cause both sides are usually "settling" when they marry, but in when you love each other you learn to see past them in time. But like I said that goes for both sides, just like a short bald unemployed guy can't expect a beautiful 21 year old cute girl, a 30 year old woman with kids and out of shape can't expect a fit, tall, above average salary man. There is nothing wrong with choosing to be a single mum. Having just dropped half a big one on paying out school fees, I would recommend you have your finances in order.

It's one thing if it has to be this way but there's no doubt and overwhelming evidence that lack of a father figure in a child's life has catastrophical effects.
