If a guy says ‘good night,’ does that usually mean he expects the girl to text him the next day?

It does not have to be. At least, I would not text the next morning. A "good night" message is not the kind of message one would answer 8 hours or more later. This is a one time message not requiring an answer.

I would certainly not answer the next day because, as stated, it is not the kind of message requiring acting upon.

Of course, if the person receiving that message is closer to the one sending it, then I presume that one could answer but if just anyone sends that message, then you are safe by not answering back. There is no commitment or necessity.
