A baby pops out of their mother, spanked on the ass by the doctor till it cries, and then given it's dad's surname... IF "baby daddy" is MIA the baby get's the mom's surname which (DUH) is the baby's grandfather's name.

So... What's the big deal about taking on the new guy's name?

Taking the new guy's name PRESUMES:

• You're making babies.
• There's no Ike-and-Tina proprietary bs going on in the workplace (in which case you keep your maiden name like Whitney Huston did, though she went into a destructive marriage... another story for another snowstorm).
• You're planning to stick around.

Why's it that a male has a surname and a woman doesn't? Maybe it's because you're old that you have such misogynistic views. It's 2025, my surname is apart of my identity. Just because it came from my father doesn't mean it's not mine too. Also it's crazy a woman carries for 9 months and it gets the males surname. This tradition stems from people viewing women as male property by the way. So a woman must get a choice if she wants to take his surname, not take it because he has a small ego.

TO me it's an insult to call cranky clueless posers like her as "feminist" bc they're not looking to uplift women or to seek official equality with work/health/financial benefits (which is the only thing the original authentic feminists really fought for). It hit a high point during the world wars, when women went to the factories and shops to keep their towns and homes going. Employers paid 1/2 wage bc women were valued as being 1/2 of a man. How do you feed a family on 1/2 a salary when you were already on a tight budget before the man of the house was drafted?

the struggle to let women vote followed... the struggle to allow women in advanced technical programs or to open a checking account without a man's signature then followed that...

The "glass ceiling" problem is something women have been fighting to break through out of necessity, not caprice.

If she chooses to, no. If her husband tells her she has to, it could be seen that way. My mom tried to change her last name twice but couldn't (the DMV in Queens closes even if people are waiting). When she asked my dad how important it was, he said that he didn't care. Because of this everyone seems to think that my mom is my stepmom because she has a different last name. She also doesn't look that much like my sister and me. My sister and I take more after our dad physically, the only thing I see similar between my mom and sister is eye color (brown). My mom and I are also left-handed, but that's not visible.
