Poor Grammar. Why Do People Use Expressions like "I COULD Care Less", for Example?

If you would think for a second (which 99% of the people who comment on this topic never do) you would realize the phrase "I couldn't care less" makes no logical sense. If it is to be taken literally it means you have reached 0% caring on the given subject or total apathy, and if that were true then why are you even bothering to acknowledge the subject at all? A person who has total apathy would just wave you off and not even acknowledge the subject-- bothering to reply means you heard the subject, processed it in your brain and tried to come off as not giving a damn about it by saying "I couldn't care less", which is b. s. because just acknowledging the question means you care a little.
With "I could care less" the phrase can be taken sarcastically, as in, "I suppose this could be more meaningless to me, but not by much." Sorry for the lecture, but it infuriates me when everybody mindlessly parrots the I couldn't care less position when 5 seconds of thought would tell you it's idiotic.
A person can acknowledge something without actually caring about it. You do know that, don't you? For example, I just looked at the clock and it's now 12:55 AM, but that's not something I can truthfully say I actually care about. I suppose I should go to bed, but... nah.
Not if you're talking total apathy you can't. Words mean things, and if you literally mean you have 0% care you wouldn't even bother to acknowledge the subject. The process of acknowledgement by itself means that, to some degree, YOU CARE.
No, that does not logically follow.
No, you simply don't understand how language works or the definitions of words.
I may not correct someone but poor grammar, either verbally or in writing, is reflective a lower education. Then, to make matters worse, these same people can have a tendency of using vulgarities and think there's nothing wrong with it.
If you want to come across as knowing anything, use proper grammar and lose the vulgarities. If you're writing, make sure to use the correct spelling and punctuation.
You are correct. Poor grammar and the use of vulgarities also indicate a lack of class, decency, manners and basic respect for those who will read whatever it is you're trying to say. Whenever anyone cannot, for example, distinguish between "their", "there" and "they're", my opinion of their opinions (and intelligence) nose-dives. I have no time for stupid people.
Its "I couldn't care less"
I'm very particular about framing my sentences using proper grammar. I'm afraid that people would judge me if my sentences aren't properly structured. But when native English speakers confuse "your" with "you're" it just irks me (I'm not a native English speaker). I know that its weird, but I would never judge someone for their poor grammar. I only judge people who are full of bullshit.
Yes, but have you noticed that those who can't even construct a sentence properly also tend to be full of bullshit as well?
I agree with you to some extent. Not at all times. For some, English is not their native language. They do not make an effort to learn the language properly and hence, struggle to frame proper sentences.
I have seen people who speak English quite well, be full of bullshit. What do you say about that? Anyone can be full of bullshit. Depends on the subject, and the person's views on that.
The examples you listed are rather considered informal speech than poor grammar, i think. "Hating on" is used like so: "stop hating on cats" instead of "stop hating cats", its the same meaning, just another way to say it. And using "so" in the beginning of a sentence is just informal, its like adding "like" unnecessarily to a sentence, "so, like, im not sure what to wear" for instance

My kind of topic! Good language skills (verbally and written) not only show respect for yourself but especially for others. Yes, I can excuse a foreigner speaking broken German (or English), I had to learn foreign languages myself. But native speakers have no excuse.
My list of peeves:
- The superfluous „like“. I stopped watching many YouTube videos because of it. Awful!!!
- The wrong usage of „literally“, when it’s 99.9% not literally.
- „I should of known“, etc. No comment.
- „I could care less“. Already mentioned.
- Then/than, its/it‘s, there/their
- Plural apostrophe (car’s, house’s…). Why?
I probably forgot a few…
Like, I totally agree. Bad grammar will, like, literally cause the sun to explode, but I should of known most people could care less, because their more concerned with there social media accounts then there live's. :)
:-@ :-@ :-@
Thank you for caring about grammar !!
I'd say the least offensive of those is to begin a sentence with "so", are ending one with a preposition !!. When used with the proper punctuation and license, so to speak, it could work. You're correct about misusing "could care less" instead of "couldn't care less". I hear that often and it's a big error. I also hear people using the word "dominate" when it should be "dominant", as in "she or he is a dominant female or male". As for grammar being taught in schools, and what of it if it's even being taught, perhaps some teachers will reply?
I think some of the expressions kids use, liking "hating on" someone, are just fads that become popular. My favorite is "catch feelings", as if it's a disease. LOL I loathe that one ! For some people, it's just not a priority, I suppose.
Catch feelings? I haven't heard that one before. That's just awful. :D
Yes, it turns my insides !
Lack of education and lack of care. That drives me nuts too, though. "I could care less" is saying you care too much and that you should care less than you do now. The funny thing is, you're a six foot tall Russian chick saying this. Native English speakers are even worse at English than you can imagine.
I sometimes make mistakes too, but that's only because I'm a fast typer (I mostly use this site on laptop) and this site DOESN'T LET YOU EDIT YOUR F*CKING SH*T! That drives me nuts the most!
Yes, many native English speakers don't seem to know how to speak English! :D
The thing that really jumps out at me is that news anchors on TV sometimes use bad grammar. Newspapers and magazines also use both bad grammar and incorrect spelling. Texting has made people lazy and proper English is no longer taught in schools anymore.
So what exactly are you’re implying…. Hehe
its true, I think however with forums and other things we tend to type as we speak, which I know I do.
I did for example say today ‘so, what is everyone doing for lunch today? ‘
Yeah it’s totally wrong
Chris! You've sinned! Sooooooo, how will you make up for that? :D
Actually, I've noticed this error tends to happen when people are being interviewed on TV, from people who are meant to be big-shots, like economists.
@rachelspiks hehe am sure something will come up
The intellect and gramnar of our nation was at it's peak in the 1950's.
It's been rapidly deteriorating since then.
Jive, ghetto, ebonics and street haven't helped either.
Computers and low mindedness is weakening the nation. It's only going to get worse.
To be honest many people, me included, talk on online forums as if they are having an in person conversation. The way I see it is that I'm not writing and English essay. Or a college paper that's going to be graded. The thing is that people having regular everyday conversations with people in person won't talk to each other like they are having a debate. As long there aren't extreme typos and things make sense like I can understand the just of what your trying to say is all I really need.
My pet peeve is when ghetto rats say 'aks' instead of 'ask'. I mean... really?
They don't care what you think of their grammar and also many of these sayings come from a time when the common people were largely illiterate
Maybe a lack of education. I also think sometimes people just say whatever sounds right even if it's not. I'm not stickler about that stuff because I'll usually get the gist of their message.
Poor grammar is just a lack of basic education.
I would however add the exception of the internet, where people just become lazy with grammar, and typos.
It’s dialect honey. Don’t flip out. In prestigious MFA programs people pay hundreds of thousands of dollars to learn to write characters who talk that way.
Your right. But their many times I do it and I hate it. Sometimes lazy sometimes brain fart
Sorry 😇
people with flawless grammar... that still won't make any sense whatsoever and they're full of BS anyway... I might get judgy with them...
" Understanding should be mastered and not just learned..."
- not by Paul Simon
grammar is fluid and changes frequently. I believe in allowing for freedom of discourse and cultural exchange. So much color is lost when you always follow the rules.
Poor education seems to be a large part of the problem. Some people on here have such poor grammar you can't even tell what they are asking,
@exitseven I know but Google actually does better than most of them
@exitseven I like it a lot - I wish I could speak into it...
@exitseven That would be VERY useful!
Just direct those people in question to view the following public service announcement video:
https://www.youtube.com/embed/8Gv0H-vPoDcI think "hate on" is just used like "shit on" so yes you could hate on a donkey. And the donkey can just shake it off.
In my defense I have auto incorrect still on
Well I am one of them but don't judge me English isn't my first language :P
Its been years I have read and touched English book
Well, it's forgivable if English isn't your first and natural language, but I'm referring of course to those who grew up where English is what's spoken and understood (ex. New Zealand, Canada, England of course, the U. S.).
It indicates a lack of class, manners and basic respect
I dont like short and incorrect spellings too
Reinforcement. Everyone around you uses poor grammar. You tend to pick up what others do.
Actually, I don't, but okay.
It makes me think they’re not very intelligent when I see it.
I agree, and I know couldn't care less is the right grammar.
Nobody likes people like you who correct grammar
Why not? I'm doing them a big favour.
Every language has RULES that one must follow in order to make any amount of SENSE!
A "dick move"? I don't even know what that means. Oh well, never mind.
You rest your case? I didn't even know you had one, it was so flimsy.
David is a comedian, and (like virtually ALL "Americans") you don't understand the British sense of humour (yes, that's HUMOUR, with the u).
The entire world understands it - except "Americans"! :D
While there are occasions when correcting a person's grammar is pernickety and uncalled for, I do love it when I see a douchebag getting schooled in grammar. It's amazing how many dolts on the internet go on rants describing how stupid others are, yet the very sentences they express these sentiments in are full of rookie spelling errors. It gives me great joy to watch those kinds of people getting destroyed by someone a lot smarter than them.
*you're
Really? No it's not. Don't be ridiculous. Your country is a crime-infested, militaristic, violent, crappy shithole where most people live below the official poverty line, and where if you get sick and can't afford the cost of medical treatment you're effectively screwed.
I'm here in what's rapidly turning into Nazi Australia. Yet, I still agree with you Rachel. America's a shithole. The quality of the food is atrocious, the humour is crass, the populace are (mostly) ill-educated and unsophisticated, the fashion is tacky, the consumption patterns are gross. I could go on...
No, it isn't "retard" (ex. mass shootings every single day of the year, and a big school shooting about twice a year).
We also have programmes like Medicare. No one where I live would ever go broke because he or she couldn't afford the cost of their stay in hospital.
No nation is as militarily reckless as the United (now Disunited) States of Merica, but you people call it "spreading democracy" and "nation-building".
@NicoletteXO Yes, I love that too :)
There are a lot of these douchebags here on GAG I've noticed, and they usually prefer to remain anonymous.
KevnHanma - "Oh your British that explains a lot actually"
Oh dear. It's "you're", which is a contraction of "you are" (and thanks goes to Nicolette for noticing that very basic mistake before I did).
@NicoletteXO - Please, do go on! :D
I've heard about Stasiland Victoria, and what the Glorious Fuehrer in that state is doing, turning ordinary police into the Gestapo. I follow YouTube channels like RT and Wion, and it's just vile and abhorrent. From what I've heard, even North Koreans now have more freedom than Australians.
KevnHanma - Spoken like a truly uneducated, uncouth, uncultured knuckle-dragger. The rest of the world looks down its nose at your shitty little nation, a nation where people actually believe that Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez is "far too left-wing". I mean, seriously? She's a centrist, someone with moderate views. There's nothing controversial about her whatsoever, but apparently many in your nation are so unbelievably ignorant (and proud of that ignorance, by the way) that they think she's a communist.
(yawn) Your retarded nonsense bores me. Good bye you poor, deluded fool. :P
Whatever (yawn)
Death to Yankeeland! Allah Akhbar! Long live the Taliban! :P
Sand monkeys? Well, first of all, there isn't actually much sand in Afghanistan, and you would know this if you weren't such a thick-skulled, ignorant Yank, and secondly, y'all just got your asses kicked by those "sand monkeys", LOL! :D
Never die? You're already dying as a nation. Your country is being torn apart by political extremists.
Most of Afghanistan is rocky mountain. You're an idiot. I'm going to block you. Good bye! :P
How come?
Proper communication is important, don't you think? Misunderstandings can cause all sorts of problems.
Ex. the difference between, "I helped jack off a horse" and "I helped Jack off a horse". A tiny difference, but one that really matters.
Ba da bing!
One's vocabulary should be broad.
