A Wharton college professor asked students what they thought the average American worker makes per year. One-quarter of them thought it was over $100k. One thought it was $800k. The real number is $45k.
What do we make of this? Are college students out-of-touch with reality that they don't have a clue how much people make?

My gosh! I can't imagine quoting those kinds of numbers if I were in college... LOL... Although when I was in college I certainly wasn't as in touch with "the real world" as much as I am now, but I think I would have been a little more realistic.
Good thing in this quote that it was only one quarter of the students who said this.
I knew in college that some people came from "sheltered" backgrounds. One young lady I knew said that her incoming roommate was "the stupidest person she ever met" because she wasn't doing real well in her computer science class. I told her that no, if she was "stupid" she wouldn't even have got into that college. It's just that computers weren't her cup of tea or she hadn't got with the swing of college classes yet.
I'm a college student at the moment. It may also depend if they were thinking of a different state beside the one they were in. Not many people would think of the whole country, just the state they reside in. I know I'm not lost on reality, but maybe some of these younger students are out of touch.

Yes. Yes they are! As a mother of one in college and one on the way, I can assure you they are totally out of touch with reality. They don't even have to starve like we did, they get a "meal plan". College age kids and those entering college expect to be paid six figures right out of graduation. They're learning.

Not all of them. The spoiled rich kids that go to the fancy private schools and have their parents pay for it are out of touch. I teach at a blue collar type college. Many of my students are just out of the military and many of them work part time jobs to pay tuition. These kids know exactly what reality is.

If their parents could afford to send them to Warton, where the first-year budget for the MBA program is an estimated $115,000, then the $800K is not an unreasonable guess.

That’s funny. They won’t know the true pressure of being an adult until they stop living off of their parents. For them to think that range is not a surprise either. My parents never discussed what they made with me
