I was hired for a job Thursday - Sunday and I haven't heard back. My friend invited me to go camping this weekend with her. Should I go?

I hardly doubt you're going to get called in to start work at the end of a work week (most jobs, their payroll begins either Sunday or Monday). However! They might call you in at the end of the week to complete some last minute paperwork, tell you details about when you're beginning and new hire orientation, or want you to come in and meet your new boss-
In other words, contact them, ask about the status of your background check and perhaps an ETA on when they expect you to come in for orientation... without seeming like you're rushing of course. If they cannot give you a definitive answer? Don't go. Because it will be just your luck they call you while you're away camping and have bad reception.
You attempted to contact them and they didn't call back so technically you're not yet employed. You should feel free to go camping and leave another voicemail to let them know that you need to get an update of when you begin.
I would call you new job to find out if they know the starting date, I'm sure your friend will understand if you need to wait to answer.
