You didn't like the 9 to 5 work schedule when you were younger. Do you like it now?

I have to Choose CSE or ME (Engineering). I am looking at CSE cause it pays good. And ME curriculumn looks quite good for me. But i heard it has less jobs and salary. I also don't want to work like all day and get sweaty.

Note:-I don't have that much passion for CSE.

My question was:-

1. would u rather choose high paying job but have less interest in it?

2. Will u get enough time to give yourself and your family? like hanging out and friends? for both CSE and ME.

3. i don't want to see myself working 5/10 years and then start earning a decent salary. I mean long term job with stable salary or high paying job that doesn't guarantee u long term job?

4. Should i stop worrying about whether i get a partner or not. Cause i think she will auto come if u have a decent situation.

I know my questions are ridiculous and foolish but im serious. i got one day to choose.

I have never worked standard hours like that for any length of time. In the US, engineering tends to be very flexible hours in much of the country. Standard hours are more likely in the east. 9-5 is more likely to be in New York City where they get paid for their lunch break. Most of the country doesn't get paid for their lunch break.

As for liking my job, that is a MUST for me. I'd rather work a job that I like than a job that I don't like even if it pays five times as much. I have walked off contracts paying 5-7K USD per week just because I didn't like it and it required a bunch of overtime.

If you are going into engineering, ANY engineering job should pay a good salary. Here in the US, engineering is the #1 job for people who become millionaires. If an engineer doesn't become a millionaire, they are seriously doing something wrong. So unless you really want to maximize your pay, do what you like and don't worry about the difference in pay. That's assuming there are jobs where you live in your chosen discipline.

Since I moved a lot and did a lot of contract work in different companies, I've worked with lots of engineers. Most engineers really like their work. But they need to get with a good company where they actually do design work, instead of going to meetings all day.

If you like doing a variety of tasks, go with small companies where you wear a lot of hats. Larger companies tend to be more specialized, doing the same thing every day. But large companies usually pay better than small companies. Personally I always preferred small companies where I did a variety.

Your real education does not come from university. Your real education starts on the first day of your first job. Early in your career, you should place a high priority on getting good marketable experience. Do NOT underestimate how valuable good experience is. Making that your highest priority is the best long term strategy.

People say things like " Its my calling " , none of that shit matters , what matters is money , and compounding , just make as much as you can.

If you love what you do, you won't mind the 9-5 schedule. Unfortunately not everyone gets to do what they love. I chose a field I am naturally good at, but not my top passion

Oh but to answer your question. No you should do the job you enjoy because you’ll find that you’re working ALL THE TIME. If you don’t enjoy it you’ll be miserable.

If you can work from home sometimes as part of your working arrangement then you will have time for a social life. If you have to be at work all the time then no and you’ll be very tired.

@Zayeem the novelty sure is fun throughout the 20s, when things are all fresh, new and exciting. Once you've been around the curve a while, you then start to prefer just simplicity and away from the elements, colds, heats, etc

I do not know where you live but in the US the demand for mechanical engineers has waned. Most of those jobs have gone to China. There are still plenty ty of IT jobs. A lot of them require you to be on site so they cannot be exported.
