Leading people vs. Managing work.

Management consists of controlling a group or a set of entities to accomplish a goal. Leadership refers to an individual’s ability to influence, motivate, and enable others to contribute toward organizational success. Influence and inspiration separate leaders from managers, not power and control.

I've owned a business and I've worked for a couple companies

For 26 years I build gas stations and there's three companies in town two of the companies every 4 months to 2 years I would go back and forth to each company if one didn't give me a pay raise when I wanted it or thought I deserved it I would go to the other company they would hire me give me when I was asking for and in time the same thing would happen I would go back to the first company they would give me what I'm asking for and then of course the 26 years I probably did it five or six times

And the only reason why I could do this is because I was good at what I did the bad part is when it one company I would be training somebody teaching somebody and then I'll walk away from that job go to the other place and in a couple years go back and now that guy that I was training with me but boss or supervisor he would tell me how to do something and I would smile and say well don't you think we better do this first because if we do it the way you want to we're going to screw ourselves tomorrow or the next day when we have to do this certain task and they would want to like argue and I wouldn't argue I would just say fine and then when it came time to do that task they would see what I was talking about but see he was a boss he was a supervisor. he only wanted the title and wanted everyone to know that he was in charge. No matter what.. this would happen 20 times in the course of a week

A leader would have listened adjusted adapted and thought about it and went on instead of trying to be right the leader is going to Jump Right In and not ask any questions going to do the work a leader leads by example by communication on how they want to be talked to leader will take control of the situation and guide or teach without any stress or anxiety a good leader their employees will follow them off the end of a cliff if they're good because they believe in that leader

If you have the title of supervisor manager boss take a good look at yourself take a good look at the way you do business do you demand it you command it or do you do it and show by example do you teach do you yell and scream do you think you have power over everybody because you are the boss of the supervisor if you do you suck and your employees will tell you the same thing they probably don't like you they probably talk behind your back a good leader everybody wants to hang around with everybody wants to help and become a team so if you have one of those three titles you should think about who you are what you are and do you really understand the job that you're doing because most don't be a leader

Have done both.
Leading is more difficult, especially if its done right.

I'm going to be making a few start-ups in the years to come, and once they're running I can't have them be reliant on my coddling. I'll have to step back into an advisory and distant management role as I move on to the next project.

Managing feels like work. Leading feels rewarding.


When you’re leading and people look up to you, trust you, and are counting on you, it’s a honor. It’s a different feeling when people HAVE to follow you vs when people WANT to follow you.


I enjoy being a leader. It’s a lot of responsibility and more pressure, but it IS rewarding.

Manager. I don't see myself as aspirational and leading, and I certainly cannot out think my band of experts. But I also do not see myself as controlling and power mad.
The reality is that I'm neither and both. There needs to be order and structure but also encouragement and reward. Where possible though, the team can organise itself. Where they do, it creates responsibility, autonomy and ownership so this seems to me ideal.
