Business that I work for started closing Saturday?

Does this mean it’s possible I will get fired? Usually the business is closed Sunday only. But the owner changed it to closed all weekend. What could this mean? Is my job at stake?

I think that you might be overreacting a bit to the implications of this.

So, first... this is going to depend a lot on the size and nature of the business you're talking about. A mom-and-pop gardening store going from 6-5 days a week means something different than the big-box garden store that has dozens and dozens of employees, or various locations etc.

But basically, it means that, for whatever reason, the business decided that it was unprofitable to continue opperating on Saturdays. That COULD potentially be a sign that "business is down, and cuts may have to be made to jobs"... but it doesn't NECESSARILY mean that.

It depends again, on the nature of the business. But there are certainly cases where a business might decide that "it makes sense" to close on the whole weekend. Anything from noticing that they don't have the customers on Saturday in particular, to the owner buying a new vacation home he wants to go to saturdays; etc.

It's hard to base anything ONLY on the fact that the decision has been made to close on Saturdays. What you need to look for is other factors to help you interpret this one. So, if you work for a publically traded business/company... check out the recent prices of their stock. If you work for a smaller place (ESPECIALLY if it's a really really small place) you're probably best to ask the boss to level with you.

"Officially" most work-place "management" will be BARRED from telling you (an employee) that there are plans to close the business pending... after all... they'd need you to stick-around until they were ready to throw-you-out-on-your-ass. So asking might not work unless it's like asking "the business owner".

But I wouldn't worry too much based on this alone. Although you're not wrong to have that little tingling of "uh oh" going on in your head. Most importantly, start paying attention to something you don't pay attention to now (for good reason. Nobody does).

As you're working... take a look at this business you work for. Is it making money? If you owned this business... would you be thinking..."damn... only 4 people even CAME IN today and I had to pay 'x' number of employees, plus rent plus... etc. "

You might be able to get a sense that you can use to help you interpret what this might mean.

It does certainly mean that there are going to be "Saturday's hours" that no-longer exist. SOMEBODY is going to lose out on that part.

So... I think you're justified to "start worrying" a little. But only a little. Look for more evidence to help strengthen or refute your suspicion/worry.

I hope there's nothing to worry about. But It's just impossible to say.

Business is not a rigid entity all the time. We are controlled by the Public. It there is little interest, traffic flow change, or seasonal slow period then we have to adjust at the margins. Saturday numbers and general winter flow may have lessened and are not justifying the Costs.

Sometimes small Business owners simply want a regular work week and two days of free time too.
