My employer gave me 2 weeks notice and plans to close the business?

had been at work today as usual and then at end of day , she gave me this letter and had me sign it. basically says my last day of work is August 21 and that business will no longer operate past that date. it indicates i have 4 days of work left before that date and that i'd still get 2 pay cheques aug 22 and sep 5th although smaller ones.

it wasn't a total surprise that she was doing this as her mother and husband had health problems and she seemed to be losing interest in the business and was always annoyed with me and my work.

i plan to still go into work tomorrow for that shift but not entirely sure about other ones as one is scheduled on a day i really didn't want to work to begin with and with job ending anyways not that worried about working it.

haven't applied for unemployment yet and not sure when i will do that or if i will qualify with the amount of hours i worked there

Dang man, that totally sucks you got laid off with such short notice. What a bummer way to go out at that job too. Few thoughts on your situation:

- Totally fair you might skip that one shift you didn't wanna work anyway. Wouldn't blame you there since it's wrapping up.

- On the plus side, sounds like you've still got a couple weeks pay coming so that's something at least. Better than nothing.

- File for unemployment asap online - whether you qualify or not is up to them, but don't leave money on the table. Worst they can say is no.

- Maybe start job hunting right away too just in case. LinkedIn, Indeed all that. A couple weeks is better than nothing to land something new.

- Treat yo self this weekend! You deserve a tasty dinner or fun activity to take your mind off things for a bit. Retail therapy always helps too hehe.

And hey, who knows, sometimes one door closing opens up an even sweeter opportunity you wouldn't have seen otherwise. Chin up bruh, you've got this! Life has a funny way of working out.

Your best bet is to do the following:

1. Help her wrap up and close the business

2. Ask her for a recommendation letter

3. On you off days, starting now, start looking for another job; see if your employer has any contacts

4. After the day the business closes, file for unemployment.

have 1 more shift this week ( tomorrow ) and maybe 2 next week depends and then its over

i plan to file for unemployment soon but going away this weekend so don't have time now to worry about this

having looked at any job listings yet either , but my area is usually slower in the fall for job listings

i plan to apply for unemployment in the coming days , its actually called" EI " here employment insurance , not exactly sure what i'd be eligible for and such

her letter mentioned i'd get whatever holiday pay i was owed for year but nothing about severance , its only a small business and doesn't even have many other employees

Even a small business has to have contingencies for this sort of situation. They can’t just leave you all flapping in the wind.

EI should provide salary for several months (it may differ in your country than in mine) and typically caps at a standard rate. (So for example if you made $50-$75 hourly for a standard 35-40hr week, EI would pay their max, approx $30-$40 hourly. They also ask you to take some online training to procure a new job.)

Severance depends on a number of factors. How long have you been working there? You also already signed a letter? What did it say? You may have already waived your right to severance.
