Recently, I got hired at a department store in my local area for the first time in 16 years. I was unemployed for 16 years, and i finally got a new job. My last job was walmart as a cart pusher, but it's didn't work out for me. After getting hired from somewhere, the job scene has changed a lot over the years. Any tips on 2020s work environments, keeping my head low and staying out of trouble.

I haven’t worked in a department store, but I’ve had good success with landing remote job opportunities during the pandemic, amidst picky employers.
I’d say it’s about having a great attitude, doing very well at the responsibilities you’re given, and being a good team player, giving credit where credit is due.
Being great to work with, both from the perspective of your boss as well as your peers.
Being great to be around and darn good at doing your job.
Huge bonus as well if you’re continually learning a growing.
I help make hiring decisions as a department head at the company I work for, and a couple of the key things we look for is resourcefulness (diligent problem-solving) and a hunger to grow/improve. 🙂
Congratulations on the new job!
I think just showing them you’re willing to work and have a great attitude goes a long way in retail. A lot of times they end up with high school kids that aren’t as mature and don’t take it seriously. Showing that you care and value the opportunity will go a long ways.
Be friendly with your coworkers. Actively try to do the job well but don't go over the top with it. Dont slack off too much. Don't complain too much. Just be someone who people enjoy being around. You'll be okay. I don't think things really change that much.
