Highschool is not useless.
In English Class, I learned to highlight different sections of articles 1. agreeing with my notion 2. agreeing with the opposing notion and 3. those on both sides / sharing a unique perspective to answer a question. We would then share our thoughts, write up an essay based on new information showcasing both sides then acknowledging the stronger weight of evidence we found as individuals also a conclusion based on it which pushed critical thinking. It was articles about littering, graffiti, fashion statements, and other dull topics though it got the point across.
I could go on for each subject, though as someone who hated writing essays & paragraphs & public speaking…. I have to admit, I learned a lot.

*Not to mention, if I didn’t have Highschool… I wouldn’t know what I’d want to do in life also wouldn’t have gotten to know some real role models of the community / find my voice / meet with friends afterschool like c’mon it is good not all bad.

For some people it's useless. For others it's not useless, but not the best use of time either. For most, it's a good idea to finish high school. If our society was set up differently, it might not be as important for so many people. But as it stands now, most people should finish.

Yes. For me at least. I’m far more creative and there wasn’t much to push me further in that direction nor did I learn about tax or buying a house or savings or anything.
I just scraped by with school because I wasn’t into the sciences or good at math. But my writing and creative side was insane.00 Reply

At your age, your mind is more-or-less functional and your idiocy (like asking this question) is simply indicative of lack of real world experience. Given that your mind is now essentially capable, embrace every learning opportunity you can - from now in high school until end of your life - because, believe it or not, you will use much of what you learn... not just in class but in getting the experience of learning about human nature that comes with interacting with other students and teachers. Every moment of every day is an opportunity to learn something new that may help you later in life.20 Reply- 2 mo
A good amount of people don't find it useful and a good amount of people find it useful, it really depends what your goal is in life and if you already know any necessary skills you would need to know throughout your life. At the same time, if society wasn't set up in a way where high school was such an important part of many people's career paths in life, I would feel like less people would find it useful (it also serves as a good way to get integrated in society and improve your social skills if not already developed. Though I think more people would also find it useful if high school was better at its purpose which is to teach and inspire students. For me it failed at both of those things which is why I never really found it useful (I still completed high school and university with flying colors due to pressure from parents but other than that there was no reason) and more of something consuming my time and dragging me down.

I think a LOT of high school is useless. Pythagorean theorem, calc, trig. They don't teach how to do you taxes, how to cook, survival, gardening, etc (at least when I was in school). The only things that I feel are beneficial in high school are basic math, reading, writing, comprehension, science, construction, and maybe a couple others. High school is also good for physical activity. You're most active (usually) in high school and it starts to die down afterwards.
I think the majority of school information can be learned through online information and AI nowadays. Sure it's good for socializing, but you can socialize in other ways. I genuinely don't think it's absolutely necessary to live and you can be successful in life without it.
I think people should focus more on finding what they're passionate about in their early years and pursuing that in post secondary when they're ready to.
00 Reply I think most schools are useless unless it's for something genuinely complex that requires hands on experience like law or medicine. Most kids don't make the most of it and most high schools are already lacking. I think it's all dependent on each person attending. If you want to make the most it'll be useful and if you don't you'll probably be fine. Most education is about you reading something and regurgitating to a teacher to let them know that you understand the material. That level of learning can be done on your own if you're competent and able to be self accountable for your learning.

It depends. High school is not for everyone. If someone is going to go on to college and work in a highly technical area, high school can help them develop the critical thinking they need to succeed. For those who will work in blue collar jibs, high school doesn't help much; a technical trade school would be better for them.

In the u. s high school is so bad. No standards because of underpaid teachers. I remember if you fail a class three times they pass you just for trying. They teach the very basics to at least learn how to study. It’s gotten to the point where if you can’t pass with a diploma then you must be stupid. But the loophole is even if you fail/drop out of high school in the u. s we have community colleges were it’s open admission you can get half a bachelor degree and use that to go to a university. I had a professor that did that. He dropped out of high school but now has a masters. Loopholes are the best!
00 Reply 2.9K opinions shared on Education & Career topic. I did not like high school so as a result I did not get too much out of it besides a dislike for authority and tendency to ignore the rules. When I went to college mist of the other kids had all these nice memories of high school. I thought they all were just shining me on.

Yes. A lot of things you learn in high school are forgotten. We should only be thought how to read, write, count, socialize, personality development and focus. We have Google or other search engines now which is basically a calculator for informations. I think what should come after middle school would be like college for teens that they can choose which course they like to take but a more practical one. They can have more time to know what they truly want. I can guarantee a lot of college graduates don't like the course they graduated at because it is only what they thought they like to do. They never really had time to decide on high school to know what the courses they thought they like would be like.

And I mean we should only be thought are how to read, wright, count, socialize, develop personality and focus, what we want to do with our life will just follow. If a kid knows how to do all of those and choose to be a doctor, that's what the focus is for. Big bang theory, geography, who invented the first air conditioner, The first president, etc, that has nothing to do with being a doctor. If they want to know that badly then that's what Google is for. Maybe I should include typing and a bit of computer science and also livelihood education to be taught because we are now living in the digital age we're almost everyone use computers.
You mean the hormonal fermentation factory? Yes. Completely useless. You know our global counterparts are all properly educated and ready for the workforce by the age of 18? It's why the military age is 18. No one was counting on American high school to "stall" folks from growing up.
00 ReplyAs a high-school teacher, I certainly don't think so. What would people do without at least a high-school education? It is required for college, trade school, vocational training, and entering the military. Most jobs that don't require a high-school diploma are low wage, dead end jobs. And that is just the jobs angle. It doesn't take into account the idea of being a well-rounded person or a responsible citizen.
10 ReplyUmm, I certainly could not be arsed. I was invested in pretty much none of it.
But you are in the system and you will have to pay your bills. So try and find your niche, make it work for you, and don't just bow to social pressure.

Useless, no. I think the way it's structured can affect how you perceive your time there, but definitely you are learning things you will need later on in life. I went to a college prep high school, which definitely helped me skip ahead in college which was useful to me and my wallet especially. Also the social aspect of high school can be amazing. I am still friends with some of my high school friends all these years later.

If they actually taught life skills like how to file your damn taxes then it wouldn't be so useless. Economics is about the best thing they have in high school but they only go so far with it.

A lot of what you learn is but the deploma itself will help you get jobs, jobs you'll most likely not use a lot of the stuff you learned but by default it does help being the paper that it is lol

I think high school should be more socializing institution. I mean.. studying basic math and biology is enough. They go too far teaching useless numbers that will never be used in our life. Obviously high school is for young adult who is preparing their social life after they grown up. They should focus on socialization rather than teaching stupid numbers that will never be used in life

Yes because it teaches facts and how to think and we shouldn't stand for such nonsense.
