How exactly should I plan on quitting my current job?

Hey, so I worked at a Kroger where I live for 16 years, and I recently completed an online course to become an insurance claim adjuster. I won't get my certificate until my class is fully paid off, but there is a plan for that. It's a very long story of why I want to quit Kroger, so I won't mention that here.

Anyway, my question is how exactly should I handle this? My mom believes I should take a leave of abcense from Kroger after getting the new job so that way, I have that job to fall back on in case the new job doesn't like me or I don't like it. She says I should say it's for personal reasons.

I get where she's coming from, but I don't trust my current store manager. I feel she's a very dishonest lady and has lied to me in the past. But I do agree that just quitting Kroger immediately may not be the best idea. Any suggestions?

Be amicable, put in your 2-week notice and be professional. If you need this job to fall back on, it will still be there after you quit and the fact that you worked there previously and had no major issues will be great for you. If you try to take a leave of absence rather than just quit, they could see that as a potentially good reason not to hire you back. If it doesn’t work out, no big deal. In most cases if you go back to a job within a 3 month period after leaving, you don’t have to interview or do onboarding again.

This is a really good comment, thank you! I've never quit a job before, so I didn't know some companies can rehire you after 3 months and not lose seniority. I'll have to really look into it with Kroger and see if they do something similar.

Quit the job completely so you can focus on the other one. Give your notice and move on.
Kroger would be bitch work anyway. There's no end of those kind of jobs available if you need them

What happens if they end up not liking me or something happens where my employment there is negatively affected? My mom mentioned that because she doesn't want me to be screwed over and have some plan B, which is why I get why she says that.

I'm also considering either doing claim adjusting part time temporarily or doing my current one part time and doing claims full time temporarily

It's a little more complicated than that. I have been with my current company for over 16 years now. Long story short, I do not have faith in the company going forward, so I'm willing to leave and lose my benefits I currently get there. She believes I should be able to fall back on that in case this new one doesn't work out. I don't have a college degree, but I do have a lot of retail experience and soon an insurance claims certificate. I'm just asking this question to get more opinions.

Hypothetically speaking what would happen if you got canned from Kroger today? You have nothing to fall back on. So to take a different job you're going to be in exactly the same position.

I'm defintely not quitting before getting a new job lined up; that was never in consideration. But doing it part time was in consideration.
