How can we have good teachers, police, judges, therapists, politicians, etc when it seems like the people who want these jobs want it for bad reasons?

I was reading quotes from the. Founding fathers and they hinted at this idea that for democracy to work there needs to be a level of distrust the people have in anyone who seeks power. That its only natural these types of people rise to power.

the only way our system works is if people are educated on how it’s supposed to work and they have the courage to take part in it. But schools have failed to provide relevant education on the history and lessons our nation was built from. These guys were all historians.

they pretty much called it from the beginning, what’s going to kill this country is people allowing themselves to be manipulated into giving up their liberty for comfort, safety and cowardice.
