Let’s face it all teachers have favorite students! If you say you didn’t you’re lying. Look I love all of students equally. I treat them the same and all have the same expectations. One student stole my heart. He is an autistic little boy and he’s so sweet. I don’t know there’s something about him I like. The problem is he doesn’t know how to write his name and eat properly which is gross but he’s seven. I blame his parents for not teaching him the right way but my sister said I can’t always blame the parents and I have to remember they’re autistic. Another excuse people give to autistic people’s behavior. I am stern with him just like any other student. I don’t think he likes me that much because he doesn’t look at me when I’m teaching a unit, he prefers the other teacher (my coworker) over me (which is fine). He needs to get use to other teachers. When we went to get our students, they said hi to other teachers but me. Some said hi to me. When my boy came, he took one look at me and that smile went away quickly. He tried to pull away from me but I couldn’t let him run off. He’s not aggressive. The other teacher offered to hold him and he didn’t pull away from her. I don’t know if it’s I seem mean, my voice or my size (I’m a very tall large woman and overweight 6’2 and 248lbs). Maybe he likes the smaller teachers or prettier teachers. Why does it hurt my heart?

It's understandable to feel attached to a student; however, focusing on why your favorite student may not connect with you is key. Children, particularly those with autism, can have specific preferences and comfort levels with individuals. It's less about personal attributes and more about building trust and understanding. Continue to be patient, consistent, and open, providing a supportive environment. Always self-reflect and remain receptive to feedback from colleagues to improve your approach, while remembering that relationships with students are built over time and may change as he becomes more familiar and comfortable with you.
