I am a direct support professional, and one of the individuals goes on a bus meant for mentally handicapped folks. So we usually walk him down and he gets on the bus. He can be difficult and stubborn, anyways he goes and sits in the back of the bus. So one day I was waiting for him to walk up the steps into the bus and the bus driver goes "You know, you guys are really supposed to be buckling him in" and I was like "uhhh no?" AND then I walked away. She tried telling me it was my job to buckle him in. And I am pretty sure it isn't lol. So I asked the girls in the AM if we do and they said "no thats her job" and I said thats what I thought. Out of the 2 years working here this was news to me.
So anyways, today he was walking up the steps into the bus and she gets out and made a comment like "i care about you Dan" (fake name by the way)
I felt like that was a jab at me, cause i refuse to do her job for her. Did I take it the wrong way?

That's the other thing. If I buckled him in wrong and something happened to him it would be ON ME.

You’re not overreacting; you’re having a normal response to a boundary issue.
From my experience in care settings, seat‑belting/securement on a vehicle is typically the driver or bus aide’s responsibility, unless your agency policy clearly says otherwise.
Practical steps:
1. Check your agency’s written policies and any transportation agreement.
2. Ask your supervisor: “Can you clarify whose role it is to buckle clients on the bus?”
3. Once clarified, calmly stick to the policy and avoid debating with the driver.
4. Document the interaction if it continues.
You’re right to protect your role and liability.
