My Observation and Thoughts on Bethesda E3 2018 Conference

So if you are a gamer, you might know it’s “E3 season”. For those that don’t know what E3 is, it’s basically a series of conferences that announce upcoming games. The one I saw yesterday was by Bethesda and I have to say I’m “speechless”. They threw in quite a few surprises. Well here are my observations and thoughts on this conference.

The appetizers

1.) Rage 2: A game that was leaked and teased prior so it wasn’t much of a surprise. It’s a post apocalyptic first person shooter. Prior to the announcements, a band went on stage a performed what seemed to be video game soundtrack which got awkward stares from the audience but the game was eventually thoroughly revealed showing a good amount of gameplay footage, which did impress me. It showed both vehicular and first person gameplay. It seems like a decent game that is coming out next year.

2.) new features for the elder scrolls card game: Probably the least anticipated announcement of the night, While it’s a nice game to play with friends, it’s definitely not a RPG. It’s going to be available on consoles.

3.) Elder scrolls online DLC: New DLC for Elder Scrolls online was discussed, it was concluded with a trailer recapping the game.

6.) Doom eternal: A sequel to the 2016 Doom was announced, this game was rumored prior to E3 so it didn’t take many people by surprise. It’s a pretty decent FPS game series.

7.)Wolfenstein young blood: The developers of the latest Wolfenstein game walked on stage although they seemed a little bit shy to be on stage. They announced that Wolfenstein 2 the new colossus will come to Nintendo switch. The biggest announcement they made was a new entry in the series called “Wolfenstein Young Blood” in which the player gets to play as William Blaskowicz’s twin daughters and thus can be played either solo or Co-op. The game is said to take place in the 1980s in Nazi occupied Paris. It will be coming out next year. I’m a big Wolfenstein fan, so I’m excited for this game.

The main dish

8.) Fallout 76: Todd Howard walked on stage and gave a approximately 20 minute speech on Fallout 76. He showed a teaser trailer that he showed at the Microsoft Xbox one conference a few hours earlier. He then showed the first gameplay footage of the player leaving Vault 76. Todd mentioned that it will take place in West Virginia and that West Virginia folklore will play a role in it. Then he addressed the biggest detail of the game, it’s “entirely online” he immediately followed by stating how people must have a lot of questions. He then clarified that players can still play solo. He showed more gameplay featuring combat, building mechanics and the ability to nuke other players with missles scattered across the map. Personally I still have a few questions as to whether or not solo play will require Xbox gold, how many NPC characters are in the game, how will the leveling system work and whether or not playing it on a personal computer will require a monthly fee. Hopefully those questions will be answered in the coming months. He did announce a special edition that will come with a wearable “power armor” helmet and a glow in the dark map of the game world. Aside from Fallout 76, Todd also announced that Fallout shelter is also going to Switch and PS4.

The desserts

Just when everyone thought the show was over, Todd Howard made a few more shocking announcements to close the show.

9.) Elder Scrolls blades: A new mobile game was teased by Todd Howard showing a impressive first person mobile RPG called Elder scrolls blades. The graphics and physics look amazing, it features three different game modes and allows the player to create their own character. It’s free and will be released in Fall for mobile and several consoles.

10.) starfield: Yes, the Starfield video game was confirmed to be in development for the next generation of consoles. Not much was shown except for a video of what appeared to be a alien planet and some kind of spaceship followed by the title “Starfield”. The game’s details are currently unknown, the only thing that is known is that it’s a new original franchise from Bethesda. Release date is unknown.

11.) Elder Scrolls 6: The most shocking announcement of the night that got the loudest pop from the audience and a standing ovation was the confirmation of “Elder Scrolls 6” for the next generation consoles. The video footage showed a fog followed by a mountainous forestry region, with a coastline. It was accompanied by drums and what appeared to be the main theme song to which the title “The Elder Scrolls VI" appeared on screen. I have to say, I did not expect this, I’m excited. The game’s release date is unknown.

Closing thoughts: I was surprised by this E3, I knew Bethesda was going to surprise the fans but not to this extent. I’m mostly looking forward to the next Wolfenstein, I’m a big Wolfenstein fan. But I have to say Fallout 76 doesn’t look too bad, the physics, graphics and atmosphere looks very good and the gameplay looks good. However I think I may get this game for my computer rather than my Xbox one assuming there are no monthly fees for PC. I know this might sound funny but I’m looking forward to that that new Elder Scrolls mobile game. However I’m ecstatic for both Starfield and Elder Scrolls 6 even though they are probably a few years away. As for the speeches, Todd Howard’s was the best. Todd is very good at giving speeches but the other speeches were still good. Overall, it was a very good E3 for Bethesda.
