Why Ready Player One is one of my top favorite Steven Spielberg Movies

I was inspired to write this based on it's July 3rd Digital release

I watched this numerous times in the theaters I was so hypnotized by it. Some called it nostalgia porn, in some ways I agree and disagree with that statement. Maybe I want nostalgia porn, maybe I want to be overwhelmed in nostalgia. This is not a main point but I guess it's a powerful idea I remember from one the movie was being reviewed.

I am going to start with two news articles that help with two of my points.

"The original blockbuster king had not delivered a true blockbuster in a decade, not since “Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull” roared into domestic theaters in the summer of 2008"

Why Ready Player One is one of my top favorite Steven Spielberg Movies

"Although Mr. Spielberg has found box office success in recent years with historical dramas like “The Post” and “Bridge of Spies,” his would-be crowd-pleasers, including the motion-capture fantasies “The BFG” and “The Adventures of Tintin,” have been ticket-selling disappointments. Even “Kingdom of the Crystal Skull” was widely viewed as a misfire; longtime fans loathed the story, leaving that whip-cracking franchise on wobbly footing. In contrast, “Ready Player One” drew the most positive audience response for any fantasy or science-fiction movie directed by Mr. Spielberg since “Minority Report” in 2005"

I completely agree this! I really wanted the Spielberg that I knew and loved from Jurassic park and Indiana Jones to come back! and this movie I felt delivered what I had been missing from him in so many years of waiting.

The second point, which I did not pick up on but embraced was this

"The Very Cool Parallels Between 'Ready Player One' And 'Willy Wonka'"

Why Ready Player One is one of my top favorite Steven Spielberg Movies

"the movies are strikingly similar. They're both based off of books, for one thing, and they're both excellent adaptations whose screenplays were co-written by their respective authors. Roald Dahl helped write the script for the movie adaptation of Willy Wonka and Ernest Cline co-wrote the script for Ready Player One. This is actually not a very common thing to see with film adaptations of popular books."

"Ready Player One is the story of a boy named Wade, who lives in poverty with his useless relatives who suddenly finds himself in the middle of a quest for an Easter Egg in a magical virtual reality world called the Oasis. Whoever finds the Easter Egg, which was hidden in the Oasis by its creator, the quirky mad scientist James Halliday, will not only win the game, they'll take over control of the Oasis and all Halliday's vast wealth.

Willy Wonka is the story of a boy named Charlie who lives in poverty with his useless relatives who suddenly finds himself in possession of a Golden Ticket. He and several others will get to tour Willy Wonka's Chocolate Factory. Wonka is a quirky mad scientist who leads a group of children through his magical factory, slowly thinning the herd thanks to each child (and parent's) vices."

"Both films present a magical fantasy world that their protagonists can lose themselves in. Wade and Charlie are both poor and friendless and find their calling inside the 'world of pure imagination.' Both are about escapism but an escapism that is ultimately unselfish and connected to others. Charlie brings his grandpa along and refuses Mr. Slugworth's advances. Wade finds friends in the virtual world who end up helping him in the real one. Both are tested to see if they understand that winning is about more than just victory, more than just the prize at the end of the race, and both pass with flying colors."

All that to say that Ready Player One excites me and takes me on a journey the same way that Willy Wonka did! and they are both about understanding the creator and the creators true intentions. It is also about both Charile and Wade being the perfect candidates for the creators positions. Also, is a coincidence that they used the song pure imagination for the trailer of Ready Player One?

I took some time to think about this and now might be a good break to tell you what my favorite Spielberg movies are and in what order. Because when this movie came out I wanted to challenge myself and this was the result and it a true top ten in both cases and in order.

Starting with movies Produced by Steven Spielberg

Why Ready Player One is one of my top favorite Steven Spielberg Movies

1. Who Framed Roger Rabbit

2. Back to the Future

3. Gremlins

4. Goonies

5. Men in Black

6. An American Tail

7. Casper

8. Super 8

9. Twister

10. Poltergeist

Then going on to movies directed Steven Spielberg

Why Ready Player One is one of my top favorite Steven Spielberg Movies

1-3 is the first three Indiana Jones Movies, all are great to me and I really think they gel together to make one, at least to me.

4. Hook

5. Ready Player One

6. Jurassic Park

7. E.T. the extra terrestrial

8. Jaws

9. Close encounters of the third kind

10. Adventures of TinTin (honestly I really did like that movie a lot and was hoping for the next installment)

and I know what you are thinking. HOW DID READY PLAYER ONE MAKE NUMBER 5!!!

I am a fantasy buff. Always have and always will be. Ready Player One is such a great fantasy film and introduces you to a new world. It also is about someone who is going after their dreams.

This is what I am always seeking. Seeking to find a way to break through and past what life has dealt me and waiting for the world to see my true potential.

As it was noted and tweeted by Jaden Smith

"I Don't Want Anymore Rules, Im A Dreamer, I Build Worlds." -Halliday

This surpasses other movie plots because it speaks to my soul and what I am really feeling.

I also loved the puzzles and the magic behind finding out the solutions. My favorite was the last one.

They were looking for the first hidden Easter egg to ever be found and they did not have to win to find it, they just had to play the game and the Easter egg was the name of the creator in Adventure for Atari

Also the way the first one was solved which is connected to the quote that Jayden Quoted and it is a magical moment that really sucks me in. I really love the background of the creator and who the creator is. He just wants things to be simple and for people to have simple fun and that's all he ever wanted. He did not want to make anymore rules. and I just connect with that. Why do we need all these rules in gaming why can't gaming just be simple like back in the day with a bowl cereal in front of the tv

It also has a classic movie theme that I love so much. A little guy taking down the big guy. Nolan (the movie bad guy) was too powerful and dangerous and needed to go down. Just what he did to Sam's Family and the concept of Ad Space just gave you an idea of his nature. The talk with Nolan and Wade was chilling and satisfying, he called him out but you saw the nature of Nolan with that little Chat. But I just loved watching him go down.

There are so many other things I like about the movie but the final thing that sticks out strongest to me is the relationship and chemistry between Wade and Samantha

Their time together may be brief and their form of connection may be too fast to call a real relationship but I still feel a strong bond between their two characters and was romanced by them every time I saw the movie

I also had a soft spot for this guy, Simon Pegg is my hero

I really enjoyed this movie, probably a lot more than others did but I think that I found a lot of myself in this movie and that is why I connected with it so much. I hope that those that did not see it in the movie theaters will enjoy it's digital and Blu-ray/DVD Release
