I'm really confused. I've watched both the musical; play version and the 2004 movie version. In both of the versions Christine says she's afraid of the phantom, wants to marry Raoul and asks for [Raoul's] protection. On the other hand she's hanging out with the phantom and sometimes it seems like she likes it. In the 2004 movie it looks like she's enjoying the attention and touches she gets from the phantom, especially in "The point of no return". While in the play version she actually tries to resist and run away. A moment she treats the phantom good and likes him, in the next second she tries to run away from him and hates him. (2 part answer bare with me please) She lost her dad. And her dad always told her that he would send an angel of music from heaven after his death. Being that this is a musical, she of course sings about the whole thing and the Phantom is listening in. He’s always had an infatuation for Christine because she had the voice he needed to act out his plays that he wrote while he was hiding away. So basically he takes advantage of the fact that Christine is waiting for her “Angel of music”. And because he is the “phantom”, he is able to sort of trick her into believing that he is that angel sent by her father. They get to know each other and the phantom falls in love with her definitely.
Christine, on the other hand, she acknowledges that they have a very deep musical connection... and it’s somewhat sexual. Christine wants to be a star. And the phantom wants the same thing since he sees potential in her voice. He basically challenges her to be the singer he knows she can be. They develop a mentor-mentee relationship, as well as a guardian angel-helpless girl relationship.. with a touch of sexual chemistry. She makes him show his face. She gets scared. He goes crazy. She marries her childhood sweetheart. But ultimately, she feels pity for the phantom. Not love. But pity because he was a sad person with problems who she shared a very deep connection with even though most of it was based on lies.
My interpretation ties into what I previously said about him being drawn to her voice. Her singing is what made him notice her and choose her to be the star of his play. So... she is his angel of music in a sense.
I see a few ties to "the book of life". I also could see the story from a perspective where the phantom's draw is power/political/status and is her ticket out of the mundane, but behind the mask is the consequences of being a trophy wife.
I do believe I see what you're trying to say about the fan falling in love with Christine after everything but you also have to remember that he deceived her in order to get that affection from her. I do understand that it said an older time where stuff like this is quite normal but you also have to understand that there is a little bit of obsession and cannot truly be considered love. Now I also understand that Christine feels indebted to the phantom for all that he has done for her but to feeling better to someone to the level where are you have to show love and complacent is that also truly love or is that just in and of itself of form of Slavery to someone who has gone out of their way to help you for their own ambitions
I believe so but she knows Raoul is better for her. To be with the phantom she'd have to live in the shadows with him, there was no future with him. God I hated Raoul. Christine is not the first woman to have to choose between love and what's in her best interest.
So why did Christine say she was afraid of the phantom and resisting in "The point of no return" in the play version? She didn't resist in the 2004 version.
You can be afraid of someone you love Like a lot of women in toxic relationships are. She feared being with him because it would ruin her. Wasn't the while point of the point of no return to trap the phantom?
Have you thought that maybe it's the danger that might have her attracted to the Phantom, and the mysterious nature that he holds is what makes it all that more appealing. Whilst Raoul is a kind soul she knew as a girl of yonder year and feels he is a complete contrast to what she has already experienced and has a whimsical attraction to that. To want a bad boy but fear his nature and want a good guy but hate the mundane, unexciting nature that he is.
Now whether this makes any sense or not that's what I feel.

The phantoms mask is a metaphor for a false face/a deception. So the play is her torn between a beautiful illusion in the phantom and more blasè reality in Raoul. So she feels passion for both but the real conflict is her learning to distinguish between false promises and real love from an honest, if less interesting, man.
Its an important story for most young women I would think. Though certainly not exclusive to them.
I think it wasn’t love but rather lust. His mystery and intrigue interested her. He took advantage of how her father always told her of an angel of music. Her rational side is drawing her away from fully giving in because she knows that Raoul will be good for.
Ok... so here is my theory. She loved the phantom. She even slept with him the night before her wedding to Raul (in the second play, Love Never Dies). But I think she knew she could never have a future with him. He was broken and too possessive. Raoul was security. Phantom was danger. So she went with security.
Loving how a musical theatre talk has come on here, I think it was love because in the second show love never dies the phantom does save her from meg and Rohaul (can’t spell and excuse spoilers) fair enough last part it goes tits up for him in love never dies but I think Christine sees him as comfort and like a almost prince x
I don't know. A lot of times plays, movies, and books will be a bit different. Also, her resisting doesn't necessarily mean she wasn't attracted to him.
I've seen the Phantom of the opera a few times. I always thought the phantom has some jedi mind trick abilities that makes Christine enamored. There was certainly admiration.

Christine for a while believes that the phantom is an angel that her dead father sent. She has a kind of connection with him, but no, she always saw him more like a teacher rather than a man.
Now Andrew Lloyd Weber extended the story with the sequel Love Never Dies, in which it’s revealed that Christine and the Phantom do love each other, makes it difficult to finally say who Christine really “chooses.” According to ALW, she ultimately chooses the Phantom.
In other versions there are circumstances that make her choice easier or more difficult, like the Phantom’s death, or the Phantom being a wholly unsuitable match from the start.
I like to think that she chose Raoul because she loved him. That's the most obvious and acceptable motivation. That being said, it's very difficult to avoid feeling sympathy for Erik, even to the point of wishing him a happy ending.
