We Were Soldiers probably wins this one because it's based on a specific event with real characters, in addition to being a solid, gruesome movie all around. The book it's based on, We Were Soldiers Once, and Young is also a solid read.
Full Metal Jacket is good, but frankly it wouldn't be in the same league as Platoon and We Were Soldiers were it not for R Lee Ermy's contributions and performance as the Drill Instructor.
Platoon is a good "one movie to depict Vietnam in a nutshell," type of movie, so I'd probably place it second. The events of this one are based on several things that happened throughout the war that basically any unit could've had to deal with, which is a good way to make a one-off movie about a war, but in what would otherwise be a tie, this is why I rate We Were Soldiers higher.
Apocalypse Now has an interesting story behind the making of it, but it's ultimately just a modern (for the time) retelling of Heart of Darkness. It does a good job with the psychological trauma and general insanity of the situation, but I wouldn't put it with the above three.
I've never seen Good Morning Vietnam or the Deer Hunter, so I won't judge them.
Cannot say i've seen any. Mostly due to i bet it's mostly films were it makes Americans look good while killing innocents vits so...
I could be wrong and maybe they have accurate films showing americans just been dicks but i don't think that's likely.
Ehh a couple of these make america look pretty terrible actually except for we were soldiers perhaps
Ah That's good then. Ones that do shall be good films.
But i wouldn't want to risk it because I know something like Rambo for sure don't tho, that's without even watching it. I know Rambo is just mostly a propaganda ageist commies and he's just the epic guy who kills bad people with no real depth or humanity given to those he killed.
Full metal jacket.
The first half is a masterpiece and even though it falls a bit short after that, the last few sequences redeem the flaws of its middle.
I really like apocalypse now, but the last sequences are cut in a way that make me nauseous. I think it is supposed to make you feel that way using forms and music, and it's effective, at least for me. But it always prevented me to watch the rather long ending.
*to watch the rather long ending more than once.
I haven't seen too many of these. They all came out way before my time. I caught "Good Morning Vietnam" on a cable channel a few years ago, I thought it was a pretty good movie.

Apart from the Rambo films, which I can’t take seriously, they are all excellent movies. I picked We Were Soldiers because it concentrates on the beginnings of the (American) Vietnam War. They even filmed a scene where some French troops get massacred, in the same area where later the Americans would engage.

I'd have to say "Full Metal Jacket" is my favorite. Although that's not saying much. Vietnam War movies aren't very good. Nothing like World War II movies.
There aren't any which approach how good "Saving Private Ryan", or "Band of Brothers" are. There's just so many good ones.
Full Metal Jacket - unless you include Forrest Gump, which I guess you should, if you're including Rambo.
Platoon and Casualties of War are both pretty good too, but I didn't enjoy any of the others mentioned here.
I have not seen 'Apocalypse Now' so I am stuck between 'Platoon' and 'Full Metal Jacket!'
And I am not going to decide, they are both the best Vietnam war movies!
I'm not much for war films so I go with Good Morning Vietnam, well because, Robin Williams.
Full metal jacket wax always a favorite of mine. But a less realistic yet still compelling movie is good morning vietnam
For me it's The Deer Hunter, but I like them all. I also really like Casualties of War.
Apocalypse Now is based on Heart of Darkness
i did know that. :P

Hamburger Hill and Apocalypse Now.
@blububs7 nope, not right https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0093137/
"A very realistic interpretation of one of the bloodiest battles of the Vietnam War."
