Just a random question. Which man would you rather be? The Backstory: Artist: Edward Hopper Date: 1942 Medium: Oil on canvas Edward Hopper recollected, “unconsciously, probably, I was painting the loneliness of a large city.” "In an all-night diner, three customers sit at the counter opposite a server, each appear to be lost in thought and disengaged from one another. The composition is tightly organized and spare in details: there is no entrance to the establishment, no debris on the streets. Through harmonious geometric forms and the glow of the diner’s electric lighting, Hopper created a serene, beautiful, yet enigmatic scene. Although inspired by a restaurant Hopper had seen on Greenwich Avenue in New York, the painting is not a realistic transcription of an actual place. As viewers, we are left to wonder about the figures, their relationships, and this imagined world."

Well, the diner as part of a couple because I believe he has a greater chance of being happy than the single diner. Mind you, we can't know much from the picture. It's possible the so-called single diner is happily in a relationship but she's not pictured because maybe she's out of town, or he's out of town, or for any number of reasons. It's also possible the so-called couple aren't a romantic couple, or if they are that their relationship is in ruins. Perhaps they aren't happy with one another. Perhaps they are together out of convenience and not because they love one another. Who can say?

Now, that being said, I *AM* the single diner, and I have been for the past 11 years. It's generally not as woeful as people make it out to be. Indeed, I'm unaware that I'm the single diner about 95% of the time. Almost always, I'm engrossed in a book or reading something on the internet. However, the other 5% of the time, I am *painfully* aware of it, and it's not getting better but getting worse. I seem poised to be the single diner until I arrive at the grave, a prospect which can make me rather sad at times. But most of the times, I'm largely not thinking about it.

Now, I have befriended the one of the wait staff at a restaurant that I used to frequent, often at odd hours of the night. I can tell you that the wait staff develop ALL KINDS OF THEORIES about the single diner. For some reason I'm viewed with suspicion. I must have done something or have some character defect which has *made* me alone. In Hopper's own notes about the painting (or it might have been his wife's), the single diner is referred to as "sinister." At times, I find these theories kind of funny. Sometimes deliciously funny! It's like I'm a mad scientist or Bond villain! I kinda want to be mischievous and do or say something to tweek these theories even more! :)

By the way, I recently attended this waitress's wedding, and several of the wait staff attended. One confessed to me that she was surprised to see me outside the restaurant and that i wasn't at all what she suspected.

The single guy looks lonely to me. Why is he sitting in that lonely diner alone at night?

There isn't enough information to know what the couple is doing, If I choose to think that they are there for a cup of coffee and some pie, I'd want to be that guy. They may be tired a fun day and just stopped by the diner on the way home. They don't appear to be talking at the moment, but they may be comfortable with each other and content. My wife and I might look like that sometimes in similar situations (except for the clothes. LOL)

I have been a single diner in a diner where I have been visiting in many cities throughout the United States, and in Europe. You meet some interesting people when you're dining. I love Germany sitting in their guest houses you get some beautiful dishes and great conversation with beer. Strangers enjoyed talking to me when I traveled. I even went to purchase garden in Bavaria Germany. I had eaten in the same gust house that had general Patton had stayed in during world war II. Unique history.

I would rather be a single diner, I like to be alone when I eat. I can’t stand being with someone while eating. Though I don’t eat outside of my home due to it being a bit shocking, and I doubt the diner would let me blend my food lol
